No. 6 Women’s Tennis drops 4-3 heart-breaker at No. 3 Oklahoma

The Longhorns fall to 5-1 in Big 12 play and 14-4 overall this year.
NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 6 University of Texas Women's Tennis team (14-4, 5-1 Big 12) dropped a 4-3 heart-breaker at No. 3 Oklahoma (19-1, 3-0 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The dual match, which featured the lone two remaining unbeaten teams in league play, lasted four hours and came down to a third-set tiebreaker on court 6 singles.
The Longhorns had their win streak in Big 12 Conference regular-season dual matches snapped at 36. The streak dated back to a 4-2 loss at Baylor on April 12, 2017.
Texas gained an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point in dramatic fashion. OU's duo of Anchisa Chanta and Dana Guzman claimed a 6-3 victory on court 3 against the freshman tandem of Sabina Zeynalova and Bella Zamarripa.
The No. 77-ranked pair of sophomore Peyton Stearns and Allura Zamarripa answered with a 7-5 win on court 1 against the fourth-ranked duo of Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley. The Corley sisters took a 5-4 advantage after a service break, but Stearns and Zamarripa responded with a break of their own, then held serve and broke again to close out the victory and move to 7-0 in dual-match doubles play this spring.
The No. 66-ranked duo of sophomores Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (9-7) win on court 2 over the No. 50-ranked pair of Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva. Sleeth and Pisareva jumped out to a 3-0 cushion, before Collins and Chavatipon won four-straight games to take a 4-3 advantage. The two pairs traded the next five games to force a tie breaker. Sleeth and Pisareva built a 4-2 lead in the breaker, but Collins and Chavatipon answered by winning three-straight points to take a 5-4 lead. Tied at 7-7, Collins and Chavatipon won back-to-back points to earn the 9-7 win in the breaker and move to 8-2 in doubles overall this season, including a 3-0 mark in dual-match action.
The Sooners evened the match score at 1-1 when Chanta earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court 4 over Chavatipon. No. 75 Zeynalova answered with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court 3 against No. 56 Ivana Corley. Tied at 3-3 in her opening set, Zeynalova won back-to-back games to build a 5-3 lead. Corley held serve to pull within 5-4, and Zeynalova held her serve to finish out the 6-4 first-set win. Zeynalova raced out to a 4-0 advantage in the second set and cruised to the finish line to improve to 14-0 in dual-match singles play this spring.
No. 5 Stearns followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court 1 over No. 19 Sleeth to give the Longhorns a 3-1 advantage. Tied at 2-2 in the opening set, Stearns broke Sleeth and held serve to build a 4-2 lead. The two players stayed on serve for the remainder of the set, and Stearns closed out the 6-4 first-set victory. Tied at 1-1 in the second set, Stearns broke Sleeth and held serve for a 3-1 cushion. After Sleeth held to pull to within 3-2, Stearns held and broke Sleeth again for a 5-2 advantage. Sleeth broke Stearns in the following game, but Stearns responded with another service break to close out the victory and move to 17-1 overall in singles, including a 14-1 mark in dual-match action.
The Sooners tied the dual match at 3-3 with straight-set wins on courts 5 and 2. Pisareva claimed a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory on court 5 over freshman Vivian Ovrootsky, and No. 43 Carmen Corley added a 7-5, 7-5 win on court 2 against No. 50 Collins.
With the overall dual-match tied at 3-3, Emma Staker earned a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) win on court 6 against Allura Zamarripa. Tied at 5-5 in the opening set, Staker held serve and followed with a break of Zamarripa to close out the 7-5 first-set victory. Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Zamarripa broke Staker and then held her own serve to post a 6-4 set win.
Trailing 3-1 in the decisive third set, Zamarripa rallied to hold serve, break Staker in the following game and then hold serve on a deuce point to grab a 4-3 lead. Both players held serve over the next three games to give Zamarripa a 6-5 advantage. Staker fell behind 0-40 but managed to win four-straight points on her serve to force a tiebreaker. Trailing 4-3 in the breaker, Zamarripa won back-to-back points to take a 5-4 lead but Staker claimed the next three points to close out the match.
The Longhorns have a break in their schedule and return to the courts when they host No. 25 Kansas on Friday, April 8. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center, and the match will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
