No. 4 Women’s Tennis sweeps No. 25 Kansas, 7-0

The Longhorns improve to 6-1 in Big 12 play and 15-4 overall this year.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 4 University of Texas Women's Tennis team (15-4, 6-1 Big 12) registered an impressive 7-0 sweep over No. 25 Kansas (13-8, 3-4 Big 12) on Friday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns earned their ninth victory against a nationally-ranked opponent this spring.
Texas claimed a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The No. 32-ranked pair of sophomores Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins earned a 6-2 victory on court 2 over Raphaelle Lacasse and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez. Chavatipon and Collins jumped out to a 4-0 cushion before Lacasse and Manyoma-Velasquez won two of the next three games to trim the margin to 5-2. Chavatipon and Collins held serve to close out the match and move to 9-2 in doubles overall this season, including a 4-0 mark in dual-match action.
The freshman duo of Vivian Ovrootsky and Sabina Zeynalova clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court 3 against Sonia Smagina and Carmen Roxana Manu. Smagina and Roxana Manu built a 2-0 lead, but Ovrootsky and Zeynalova won five of the next six games to take a 5-3 lead. After Smagina and Roxana Manu held serve to pull to within 5-4, Ovrootsky and Zeynalova held serve to finish the match and improve to 3-0 in dual-match play this spring.
Chavatipon opened singles action with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court 4 against Roxana Manu to move to 10-7 in dual-match singles play this season, including a 7-2 mark on court 4. Ovrootsky followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory on court 5 over Manyoma-Velasquez to improve to 9-5 in dual-match singles action this spring.
Allura Zamarripa clinched the overall dual-match victory for the Longhorns with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court 6 against Tiffany Lagarde. After blanking Lagarde in the opening set, Zamarripa faced a 4-3 deficit in the second set. Zamarripa broke Lagarde to even the set, held serve and broke Lagarde again on a deuce point to secure the victory and move to 6-1 in dual-match singles play this year.
Playing out the remaining three singles matches to completion, No. 68 Zeynalova posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court 3 over Smagina. Trailing 4-3 in the opening set, Zeynalova won three-straight games to secure the 6-4 first-set win. She then jumped out to a 5-1 cushion in the second set and cruised to the finish line to improve to a perfect 15-0 in dual-match singles action this season.
No. 38 Collins added a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win on court 2 against Ngounoue. After splitting the opening two sets, Collins held a 5-3 advantage in the third set. Ngounoue won back-to-back games to even the set at 5-5, but Collins responded by breaking Ngounoue and holding serve to finish out the victory and move to 22-8 overall in singles this season, including a 10-5 record in dual-match play.
No. 3 Stearns completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) victory on court 1 over No. 62 Titova. Titova raced out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but Stearns won four-straight games to take a 5-4 advantage. The set moved into a tie breaker, where Titova built a 3-1 cushion before Stearns won six of the next seven points to claim a 7-4 win in the breaker.
Stearns had leads of 3-0 and 5-3 in the second set, but Titova won three-straight games on deuce points to grab a 6-5 advantage. Stearns won the following game on a deuce point to force another tiebreaker. She jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the breaker, before Titova won three of the next four points to trim the margin to 5-3. Stearns won back-to-back points to close out the match and improve to 18-1 overall in singles, including a 15-1 mark in dual-match action.
The Longhorns host their final regular-season home match against No. 52 Kansas State on Sunday, April 10. First serve is set for Noon Central at the Texas Tennis Center, and the match will be televised by Longhorn Network.
