SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 21-over-par 371 in difficult weather conditions on Monday afternoon to rest in second place in the team standings following the opening day of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. Monday's round was played in winds that gusted between 25-and-30 miles per hour and featured chilly temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s.
Senior Pierceson Coody, who earlier in the day was named one of 16 collegiate golfers to the Fred Haskins Award Spring Watch List, paced the Longhorns with an even-par 70 and is tied for the individual lead with three other competitors.
Monday's opening round was suspended due to darkness, as No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 14 Stanford still had the 18th hole to play. Three pairs from both teams will finish their first round on Tuesday at Noon Central (10 a.m. Pacific).
The Western Intercollegiate uses a six-player lineup for each team, with the best five scores counting for the team score. Pepperdine holds the lead in the team standings at 18-over-par, just three strokes in front of the Longhorns at 21-over-par 371. No. 6 Washington is third at 23-over-par 373. The 14-team field at the Western Intercollegiate includes four squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (April 1).
Pierceson Coody shares the 18-hole individual lead with Colorado State's Rasmus Hjelm, Nick Watts of San Jose State and Pepperdine's Dylan Menante. Menante is even-par through his first 17 holes, while Coody, Hjelm and Watts all completed their opening rounds on Monday. Texas junior Travis Vick and senior Cole Hammer are each tied for 12th place after registering a 3-over-par 73 in the opening round.
The Western Intercollegiate continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, April 12 and concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, April 13.
