A brace (two goals) from freshman midfielder Jilly Shimkin led five UT goal scorers against the Hilltoppers
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in spring action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, a brace by freshman midfielder Jilly Shimkin and single goals from freshman midfielder Lexi Missimo, senior forward Mackenzie McFarland, junior forward Teni Akindoju and freshman forward Holly Ward powered Texas soccer (4-0) to a commanding 6-0 victory over St. Edward's.
Thus far this spring over four matches, Missimo and Shimkin lead the way stat-wise for Texas with four goals apiece. Freshman forward Trinity Byars and McFarland each have two, while junior forward Sydney Nobles, freshman defender EmJ Cox, Ward and Akindoju have all scored once during the spring campaign.
Texas got right to work from the opening kick, using a swarming defense to wrest early control of the contest over the opening 10 minutes.
With St. Edward's under duress at the 10:10 mark, McFarland nabbed a loose ball off a turnover and fired a shot low off the post and into goal for a 1-0 advantage.
It took just 1:44 for the Longhorns to double their advantage as Shimkin tallied her first of the match. On a deflected ball off a Hilltoppers player, senior defender Cameron Brooks played a pass to Shimkin. The Penn State transfer wasted no time turning and blasting a curling effort into the upper 90 to make it 2-0.
During the 18th minute, Texas senior midfielder Emma Regan took possession and dribbled her way through midfield before passing to Missimo. The Southlake, Texas, product soon drove a 25-yard effort into the twine to boost the gap to 3-0.
Texas would add one more before halftime at the 27:14 mark to take a 4-0 advantage into the locker room as Akindoju scored on her first touch of the match off a centering pass by junior forward Sydney Nobles.
Just 2:39 out of the break, Missimo earned an assist as her cross from the right wing was settled and scored by Ward to make it 5-0.
The advantage was finalized at 6-0 with 38:22 left in regulation after Texas offensive pressure resulted in consecutive shots from Byars and Ward. Off the latter's effort, the ball eventually bounced to Shimkin who drove a left-footed effort into the corner for her second goal of the match.
