Texas doubles pairs of Richard Ciamarra with Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri with Siem Woldeab will start play on May 24.
Champaign, Ill. – The draws for the 2022 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships were released Sunday by the NCAA, including opponents for two doubles pairs for Texas Men's Tennis in a field of 32.
The fourth-seeded and No. 4-ranked duo of senior Richard Ciamarra and sophomore Cleeve Harper will open with No. 37 Philip Henning and Trent Bryde of Georgia on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT, while 5-8 seed and No. 8-ranked Eliot Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab will face No. 18 Connor Thomson and Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina at 3:30 p.m. CT.
The Longhorns had received two at-large bids to the singles draw in sophomore No. 26 Micah Braswell and freshman No. 34 Pierre-Yves Bailly, however both withdrew due to injury. Spizzirri had also been the No. 10 alternate in singles, but not enough players withdrew for him to enter the field.
Ciamarra and Harper have combined for a 19-10 overall record in 2021-22, including a 10-7 mark in dual match play with 12 of those decisions coming at No. 1 where they were 8-4. Although an injury forced Harper to miss several matches during the season, they reunited for 12 of the last 13 with all but three of those at No. 1, earning the Big 12 Individual Championship at No. 1 doubles and All-Big 12 First Team honors. In the fall, they made a run to the finals of the ITA Texas Regionals.
Spizzirri and Woldeab have combined for a 14-4 overall record that includes a 12-3 mark in dual match play, going 5-1 at No. 1, and 7-2 at No. 2. They have won five straight and eight of their last nine contests, and overall this season have secured five top-25 victories with three in the top 15. After winning both of their matches at the Big 12 Championship they were named to the All-Tournament Team at No. 2 doubles and were later selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
By virtue of their top-eight seeds, both pairs are qualified to receive ITA All-America honors, which will be announced later in the year.
The NCAA singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign. All doubles matches will be the best-of-three sets with 10-point superbreakers played in lieu of a third set.
