No. 6 Men’s Golf tied for 11th after opening round at NCAA Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 6 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 11-over-par 291 on Friday afternoon to rest in a tie for 11th place in the team standings following the opening round of the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club. Senior Cole Hammer paced the Longhorns with a 1-over-par 71 and is tied for 16th in the individual standings.
Vanderbilt holds the team lead after the first 18 holes at 2-over-par 282. Oregon and Auburn are tied for second at 5-over-par 285. The Longhorns are just nine strokes off the lead following Friday's opening round.
Harry Hillier of Kansas and Auburn's Brendan Valdes share the 18-hole individual lead at 2-under-par 68. A total of seven individuals in a field of 156 players recorded under-par scores in Friday's opening round.
The 2022 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. In Saturday's second round, the Longhorns will be paired again with Florida and Texas Tech, and tee times will begin at 9:05 a.m. CT (7:05 a.m. PT) from hole 1.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 30, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 31, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1.
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer recorded a 1-over-par 71 and is tied for 16th place in the individual standings. Starting on the back nine, Hammer made the turn at 1-over. He tallied birdies at holes 1 and 3 to get to 1-under before making double-bogey on 7. Hammer registered a team-best four birdies in his opening round.
- Senior Parker Coody posted a 2-over-par 72 and is tied for 32nd. He made back-to-back birdies on holes 4 and 5 to climb to 1-over before making bogey at 6 to finish at 2-over.
- Senior Pierceson Coody carded a 2-over-par 72 and is tied for 32nd. He recorded three birdies during his opening round, including one at the finishing ninth hole.
- Junior Travis Vick fired a 6-over-par 76 and is tied for 101st, and junior Mason Nome registered a 7-over-par 77 and is tied for 121st.
