No. 15 Men’s Golf finishes second at Southern Highlands Collegiate

Vo records a team-best 3-under 69 on Tuesday, while Maas posts a collegiate-best runner-up individual finish.
LAS VEGAS — The No. 15 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 3-under-par 285 on Tuesday to finish in second place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Freshman Keaton Vo paced the Longhorns with a 3-under-par 69 in the final round, while freshman Christiaan Maas recorded a collegiate-best runner-up individual finish with a 54-hole score of 10-under-par 206 (66-69-71).
The Longhorns registered a three-round total of 19-under-par 845 (283-277-285) to finish just two strokes behind team champion No. 9 Illinois at 21-under-par 843 (285-281-277). No. 16 Pepperdine placed third at 18-under-par 846 (278-286-282), and No. 3 North Carolina finished fourth at 16-under-par 848 (271-285-292). The 15-team field featured nine teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Feb. 10).
Maas, who posted his collegiate-best 18-hole score of 6-under-par 66 in Sunday's opening round, fired a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to finish three strokes behind individual medalist Yuxin Lin of Florida at 13-under-par 203 (64-70-69). Maas previously recorded a tie for third place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate (Oct. 3-4). Tommy Kuhl of Illinois (72-67-68) and Texas A&M's William Paysse (69-69-69) tied for third at 9-under-par 207.
Maas was one of five Longhorns who placed in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard at the Southern Highlands Collegiate. Freshman Tommy Morrison, competing as an individual while making his collegiate stroke-play tourney debut, tied for ninth at 7-under-par 209 (70-70-69). Vo (74-70-69) and freshman Jacob Sosa (71-70-72) each tied for 19th at 3-under-par 213, and graduate Brian Stark tied for 22nd at 2-under-par 214 (72-68-74).
In UT's first three events this spring, the Longhorns have claimed the tournament title at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 30-Feb. 1), posted a 4-1-1 victory against No. 11 Georgia Tech in a match-play event in Hawaii (Feb. 10) and earned a runner-up finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 26-28).
Texas returns to the course on March 26-28 (Sunday-Tuesday) when it competes at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla.
The Lineup
- Freshman Christiaan Maas carded a 1-under-par 71 in his final round to finish as the individual runner-up with a three-round total of 10-under-par 206 (66-69-71). He placed three strokes behind medalist Yuxin Lin of Florida at 13-under-par 203 (64-70-69). The runner-up showing marked a collegiate-best performance for Maas, who previously tied for third place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate (Oct. 3-4). Maas registered four birdies during his final round and was 2-under on the challenging back nine. He has earned three top-five individual finishes in his six stroke-play events this season, as he also tied for fifth at the Southwestern Invititional (Jan. 30-Feb. 1).
- Freshman Tommy Morrison, competing as an individual, fired a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to tie for ninth at 7-under-par 209 (70-70-69). He posted three-consecutive under-par rounds in his collegiate stroke-play tourney debut. Morrison tallied three birdies and an eagle on his closing par-five 9th hole in his final round.
- Freshman Keaton Vo tallied a team-best 3-under-par 69 in his final round to tie for 19th at 3-under-par 213 (74-70-69). Vo, who was 4-under at the turn, began his round with three-straight birdies and added an eagle on the par-five ninth hole and another birdie on 14.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday to tie for 19th at 3-under-par 213 (71-70-72). He registered three birdies during his final round.
- Graduate Brian Stark fired a 2-over-par 74 in his final round to tie for 22nd at 2-under-par 214 (72-68-74).
- Senior Travis Vick registered a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to tie for 50th at 4-over-par 220 (75-72-73).
