Texas returns to the diamond for the first time since its record-setting performance when the Longhorns host North Texas
AUSTIN, TX – The University of Texas softball program will look for its 10th win at Red & Charline McCombs Field this season when the Longhorns host North Texas for a non-conference mid-week contest on Wednesday, March 1 with first pitch scheduled for 6 PM CT.
Wednesday night's action will be available to view on the Longhorn Network with Alex Loeb and Cat Osterman on the call. Andrew Haynes will also bring the game's action to the airwaves as the game can be heard on 105.3 FM.
LEADING OFF
- Texas will enter Wednesday night's softball game against North Texas with a .397 team batting average, which is the highest mark in the nation.
- Of the softball programs ranked in the top five in batting average, the top three are in the Big 12 Conference: 1. Texas (.397), 2. Oklahoma State (.394) and 3. Oklahoma (.382).
- Additionally, Baylor (.370) is ranked eighth, giving the Big 12 four softball programs ranked in the top 10, which is one more than the SEC for the most by a single conference.
- Of the softball programs ranked in the top five in batting average, the top three are in the Big 12 Conference: 1. Texas (.397), 2. Oklahoma State (.394) and 3. Oklahoma (.382).
- The Texas offense features the top three student-athletes in the Big 12 Conference in terms of hits collected through this point of the season: 1. Leighann Goode (25), 2. Viviana Martinez (24) and 3. Mia Scott (24).
- The Longhorns have three of the seven softball student-athletes who have been credited with 20-or-more hits so far this season.
- The Big 12 Conference's single-season record for most hits by a freshman is 91 set by Oklahoma's Tiare Jennings during the 2021 season.
- First-year Longhorn Mac Morgan is the only pitcher in the Big 12 Conference with three-or-fewer walks (3) in 30-or-more innings pitched (31.0).
- The next closest student-athlete in the league to Morgan's numbers is Iowa State's Karlie Charles, who has walked only three batters in 21.2 innings pitched.
- Morgan's 0.68 walks allowed per seven innings mark is the top clip in the league.
- Leighann Goode will enter Texas' game against North Texas as the second toughest batter in the Big 12 Conference and 11th in all of Division I softball to strikeout. In 48 plate appearances in 14 games this season, Goode has struckout only once.
- Goode is one of only two Texas softball student-athletes, who meet the minimum reqirement of two plate appearances per game, to only strikeout one time. Ashton Maloney is the other Longhorn as the redshirt freshman has struck out only once in 30 plate appearances so far this season.
- In 18 all-time softball games against North Texas, the Texas Longhorns have won 17 of those contests, including the last 10 consecutive.
- Under fifth-year head coach Mike White, Texas is 3-0 against North Texas: 3-2 (9) on Feb. 19, 2020, 5-1 on Feb. 21, 2021 and 8-2 on March 9, 2022.
- Wednesday night's game will be the first between the two softball programs at Red & Charline McCombs Field since Feb. 19, 2020, when the Longhorns won, 3-2, in nine innings.
- Texas is 13-0 all-time against North Texas in games played in Austin.
- The Longhorns have scored at least one run in 17 of 18 games against the Mean Green.
- Texas is 17-0 when scoring at least one run against North Texas.
- A win over North Texas will give Texas its 10th home win on the season, extending a streak of 10-or-more wins at home for 27 consecutive seasons.
- Following a Texas single-game record of five runs scored in the Longhorns' win over Texas Southern on Sunday, Feb. 26, true freshman Leighann Goode leads the nation with a 1.62 runs per game average.
