No. 9/10 Softball preview: Sam Houston

Texas looks to bounce back from back-to-back heartbreakers with trip to Sam Houston
AUSTIN, TX – For the first time in program history, The University of Texas softball program will travel to Huntsville, Texas for a non-conference softball game at Sam Houston when the two teams meet on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30 PM CT.
Tuesday evening's game will also mark Texas' second true road contest of the season after the Longhorns (21-4-1) picked up a 12-3 victory against UTA in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday, March 8. The game will also represent the first of six softball games away from Red & Charline McCombs Field for the Longhorns before returning to host Stephen F. Austin at 6 PM on Wednesday, March 22.
LEADING OFF
- Texas will enter Tuesday evening's game having won the last three straight contests against Sam Houston as well as 18 of the last 19 dating back to March 27, 1997.
- Of the Longhorns' 18 wins over the Bearkats, five have come via run rule.
- When the two programs met the last time — March 2, 2022 — Hailey Dolcini, who currently serves as a graduate assistant on the Texas coaching staff, threw a 111-pitch complete game shutout as the Longhorns won 2-0.
- Dolcini struck out 14 of the 26 batters she faced and issued only two walks.
- Of the two hits Dolcini surrendered to the Bearkats, both were singles which came in the second and seventh innings, respectively.
- Following her seven hits in the five-game Bevo Classic over the weekend, Leighann Goode passed fellow freshman teammate Viviana Martinez for the most hits in Division I softball by a freshman student-athlete.
- Goode will enter Tuesday night's game at Sam Houston with 39 hits in 26 games played.
- She ranks fourth in the nation in total hits behind Wichita State's Sydney McKinney (47), Clemson's Valerie Cagle (42) and Iowa's Nia Carter (42).
- Martinez has the second most hits by a freshman with 37.
- Goode (1), Martinez (2) and Mia Scott (2) are all among the top of the Big 12 Conference in hits.
- Goode will enter Tuesday night's game at Sam Houston with 39 hits in 26 games played.
- With her six home runs through 26 games this season, Courtney Day is tied with Texas Tech's Peyton Blythe for the Big 12 Conference lead.
- Texas and Texas Tech will square off in Austin next weekend to begin Big 12 Conference play.
- In Texas' only other true road game this season, redshirt freshman Ashton Maloney turned in a career performance with three hits — two doubles — and four runs batted in when the Longhorns knocked off UTA, 12-3, in Arlington on March 8.
- Earlier this season, Sam Houston knocked off Texas A&M, 4-0, in Waco as part of the Ode to Joy Invitational hosted by Baylor.
- In that Bearkats' win, Emma Guindon threw 105 pitches to 27 different batters throughout seven innings and allowed only one extra base hit while striking out two and issuing only one walk.
- Among the Big 12 Conference, Texas ranks in the top three in 10 different statistical categories: batting average (3), doubles (3), doubles per game (3), earned run average (3), scoring (3), shutouts (3), stolen bases per game (2), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2), triples per game (1) and win/loss percentage (3).
