No. 10/8 Softball heads into Big 12 play following 5-inning win
03.22.2023 | Softball
In final tune-up non-conference game before conference play, Texas handles Stephen F. Austin in five innings.
AUSTIN, TX – Of the 68 pitches thrown by two Texas pitchers during the Longhorns' 13-2 five-inning win over Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday night, only one hindered what could've been a perfect night for the home team.
With two outs in the top of the third and Texas leading by nine runs, a 3-2 pitch was thrown and then sent over the left-centerfield fence for a two-run home run to cut the Longhorn. But, as any head coach would want, Mike White's squad responded an inning later with a four-run bottom of the fourth that was highlighted by a two-out, two-run pinch-run home run by Jordyn Whitaker.
Whitaker's hit capped a 13-hit, 13-run performance by a Texas offense that scored three first-inning runs, six more in the second and then four more in the fourth. The 13 runs were the second most by the Longhorns in a single game this season since plating 22 runs in five innings against Texas Southern on Sunday, Feb. 26.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Leighann Goode and Mia (Scott) got us going there in the right way to start the bottom of the first and Reese (Atwood) cashed in, again, so the freshmen did a really good job, again. And Camille Corona, I think she wants to keep playing because she did a great job for us. Of course, the pitching and defense was solid, which was great. Right now, we just need to stay on a roll."
FROM JUNIOR CAMILLE CORONA
"I think (the offense) just had a really simple approach (at the plate tonight): it was just see ball, hit ball, middle middle. Leighann (Goode) got it started right away with a very solid hit to right (field). I think we just had clear minds and a simple approach."
