Luke Hobson wins 200-yard freestyle national crown at NCAA Championships

Sophomore Luke Hobson won his second individual national title of the week, the first Longhorn since 2018 to win multiple individual national titles at the same meet.
MINNEAPOLIS – Men's Swimming and Diving's Luke Hobson won his second national title of the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle on the third night of competition at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center on Friday. Coupled with his 500-yard freestyle victory on Thursday, Hobson is the first Longhorn to win multiple national titles at the same meet since 2018 when Townley Haas won the 200 free and 500 free.
The Longhorns are in third place with 292 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition. California leads with 315 points and Arizona State is second with 302 points, while Indiana (259) and Florida (251) round out the top five.

Hobson won 200 free gold with a time of 1:30.43, taking control of the race in the final 100 yards to win his second career individual title. The sophomore has three titles to his name this week after helping UT set an American record in the 800 free relay on Wednesday to secure the program's fourth consecutive title in the event. Coby Carrozza took eighth in 200 free final, touching the wall in 1:32.67 for his first career individual All-American honor.
For Hobson, he is the seventh Longhorn to win the 200 free championship and it is the 10th overall title in the event in program history. Texas has won five of the last seven 200 free championships, with Haas winning three-straight from 2016-18 and Drew Kibler winning in 2022.
Texas opened the meet with a trio of swimmers in the 400 IM championship final for the second consecutive year. Carson Foster earned bronze, placing third with at time of 3:36.02, the fifth-fastest time in program history. He now owns each of the top-five Texas marks and nine of the top-12. Jake Foster added a seventh-place finish for the Longhorns with a time of 3:40.03 and David Johnston placed eighth with a time of 3:40.10.
Caspar Corbeau took fourth in the 100 breast with a time of 50.79 to earn the fourth All-American honor of his career in the event.
On 3-meter, all three Texas divers once again earned points for the Longhorns. Noah Duperre highlighted to evening for UT with an eighth-place finish in the championship final, scoring 383.30 points. In the consolation final, Nick Harris finished as the runner-up with 406.45 points to place 10th overall and Brendan McCourt tallied 388.40 points to take seventh in the group and finish 15th overall.
The Longhorns closed out the night with an eighth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Carson Foster, Corbeau, Cole Crane and Hobson combined to swim 3:03.00, finishing second in heat two with the eighth-best time on the night.
The NCAA Championships will conclude on Saturday, March 25 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center.
Saturday's action will feature competition in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 3-meter springboard diving and 400-yard medley relay. Prelims start at 9 a.m. CT with the finals sessions scheduled to get underway each day at 5 p.m. CT. All prelim and finals sessions will be streamed live on ESPN+.
