No. 11 Men’s Golf places third at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

Stark fires a 6-under 65 on Wednesday to help the Longhorns climb from fifth to third in the final team standings.
PALM CITY, Fla. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 10-under-par 274 on Tuesday to finish in third place at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club. Graduate Brian Stark fired a 6-under-par 65 on Tuesday and recorded a tie for fourth place with a 54-hole score of 9-under-par 204 (68-71-65).
Stark posted his best tourney finish as a member of the Longhorns, as the grad transfer who enrolled prior to the start of the spring semester previously tied for 22nd at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 26-28). His 6-under-par 65 also marked his low 18-hole score at Texas.
The Longhorns, who began the final round in a tie for fifth place in the team standings, jumped up a pair of spots to finish in third with a 54-hole score of 15-under-par 837 (280-283-274). No. 4 North Carolina tallied a 12-under-par 272 on Tuesday and won the team title with a three-round score of 27-under-par 825 (275-278-272). No. 3 Texas Tech placed second at 21-under-par 831 (277-273-281).
The 16-team field featured eight teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Mar. 24), including three squads in the top four and five in the top 10.
Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg claimed medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 11-under-par 202 (65-67-70). Ben Carr of Georgia Southern (66-69-68) and North Carolina's David Ford (67-68-68) both finished one stroke behind Aberg at 10-under-par 203. Stark joined two other golfers, Maxwell Moldovan of Ohio State and Arizona State's Preston Summerhays, in a tie for fourth at 9-under-par 204.
The Longhorns return to the course later this week at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on April 1-2 (Saturday-Sunday) in Augusta, Ga.
The Lineup
- Graduate Brian Stark fired a 6-under-par 65 on Tuesday to tie for fourth place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 9-under-par 204 (68-71-65). This marked Stark's best finish as a Longhorn since transferring in at the start of the semester (previously tied for 22nd place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Feb. 26-28). The 6-under 65 marked his best 18-hole score as a Longhorn (had shot 68 twice previously). Stark posted six birdies (holes 3, 6, 12, 13, 15 and 17) without a bogey on Tuesday.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas tallied a 4-under-par 67 in his final round to tie for ninth place with a 54-hole score of 6-under-par 207 (69-71-67). This marked Maas' fourth top-10 individual finish in seven stroke-play events this season. He recorded four birdies and one eagle (par-five 13th hole) on Tuesday.
- Freshman Tommy Morrison carded an even-par 71 in his final round to tie for 38th place with a 54-hole score of 1-over-par 214 (71-72-71). He registered three birdies during Tuesday's round.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa posted a 3-over-par 74 on Tuesday to tie for 42nd place with a 54-hole score of 2-over-par 215 (72-69-74).
- Competing as an individual, senior Travis Vick fired a 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday to tie for 48th with a 54-hole total of 3-over-par 216 (72-75-69). Vick tallied six birdies during his final round.
- Freshman Keaton Vo carded an even-par 71 on Tuesday to tie for 56th place at 5-over-par 218 (72-75-71).
