No. 13 Men’s Golf tied for fifth after day one at ASU Thunderbird Invitational

PHOENIX, Arizona — The No. 13 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 36-hole score of 4-under-par 564 (285-279) on Friday to rest in a tie for fifth place after the opening day at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course. Senior Travis Vick fired a 4-under-par 138 (68-70) and is tied for 12th in the individual standings after the opening two rounds.
Tourney host No. 4 Arizona State holds the 36-hole lead in the team standings after posting a 23-under-par 545 (264-281) on Friday. No. 19 Arizona is second at 22-under-par 546 (275-271), and No. 22 Oklahoma State (274-280) and No. 2 North Carolina (277-277) are tied for third at 14-under-par 554. The 12-team field features six teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (April 14), including three of the top four squads in the nation.
Four players are tied for the individual lead after the first 36 holes. David Ford of North Carolina (68-66), Arizona's Sam Sommerhauser (67-67), Johnny Keefer of Baylor (66-68) and Arizona State's Preston Summerhays (66-68) each posted two-round totals of 8-under-par 134.
The ASU Thunderbird Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Saturday, April 15. Texas will be paired with SMU, Oregon State and Baylor for Saturday's final round, and tee times will begin at 9:24 a.m. Central (7:24 a.m. Pacific).
The Lineup
- Senior Travis Vick carded a 36-hole total of 4-under-par 138 (68-70) on Friday and is tied for 12th place in the individual standings. Starting on the back nine in his morning round, he was 1-over thru the first three holes before making four birdies and 11 pars to close out a 3-under 68. Vick made nine straight pars to begin his second round and added three birdies against two bogeys after the turn to post a 1-under 70 in the afternoon.
- Graduate Brian Stark posted a two-round total of 1-under-par 141 (73-68) on Friday and is tied for 24th. He recorded six birdies during his afternoon round of 3-under 68.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa fired a 36-hole total of even-par 142 (74-68) on Friday and is tied for 34th place. In his afternoon round, Sosa was even-par at the turn before making three birdies and six pars over his final nine holes to record a 3-under 68.
- Competing as an individual, senior Mason Nome registered a 36-hole score of even-par 142 (68-74) and is tied for 34th. He tallied six birdies against three bogeys while recording a 3-under 68 in his morning round.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas tallied a two-round total of 2-over-par 144 (71-73) and is tied for 43rd place in the individual standings. Maas was 2-over at the turn in his morning round before posting three birdies against one bogey over his final nine holes to record an even-par 71.
- Freshman Tommy Morrison fired a 36-hole score of 4-over-par 146 (73-73) and is tied for 56th place.
- Freshman Keaton Vo, who is competing as an individual, carded a two-round total of 5-over-par 147 (74-73) and is tied for 59th.
