No. 13 Men’s Golf ties for sixth at ASU Thunderbird Invitational

Vick paces the Longhorns with a 54-hole score of 5-under-par to place 11th in the individual standings.
PHOENIX, Arizona — The No. 13 Texas Men's Golf team posted a final-round score of even-par 284 on Saturday to finish in a tie for sixth place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course. Senior Travis Vick carded a 1-under-par 70 during Saturday's final round to place 11th in the individual standings with a three-round total of 5-under-par 208 (68-70-70).
The Longhorns posted a 54-hole score of 4-under-par 848 (285-279-284). Tourney host No. 4 Arizona State claimed the team title with a three-round total of 28-under-par 824 (264-281-279). No. 19 Arizona placed second at 27-under-par 825 (275-271-279), and No. 2 North Carolina took third at 20-under-par 832 (277-277-278). The 12-team field featured six teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (April 14), including three of the top four squads in the nation.
Freshman Christiaan Maas posted the low score of the final round for the Longhorns with a 2-under-par 69 and tied for 35th at even-par 213 (71-73-69). Arizona State's Preston Summerhays claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 13-under-par 200 (66-68-66). Three Arizona golfers tied for second place at 9-under-par 204, including Zach Pollo (65-70-69), Chase Sienkiewicz (68-67-69) and Sam Sommerhauser (67-67-70).
Texas returns to the course on Monday, April 24 through Wednesday, April 26 when it travels to Hutchinson, Kan. to compete at the Big 12 Championship.
The Lineup
- Senior Travis Vick carded a 1-under-par on Saturday to place 11th in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 208 (68-70-70). He registered five birdies against four bogeys during his final round on Saturday. Vick's 11th-place finish marked his best individual showing since he tied for ninth at the East Lake Cup on Oct. 24.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas posted the low round of the day for the Longhorns on Saturday with a 2-under-par 69 to tie for 35th place at even-par 213 (71-73-69). Maas birdied three of his first seven holes on Saturday before making bogey on hole 8 and completing his round with 10 consecutive pars.
- Competing as an individual, senior Mason Nome fired an even-par 71 on Saturday to tie for 35th at even-par 213 (68-74-71). Starting on the back nine on Saturday, he tallied three birdies over his opening seven holes and made the turn at 1-under. After dropping to 1-over through 17 holes, he made a birdie at the closing ninth hole to finish at even-par in his round.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa carded a 1-over-par 72 in his final round to tie for 39th at 1-over-par 214 (74-68-72). He made four birdies during his round on Saturday.
- Graduate Brian Stark recorded a 5-over-par 76 on Saturday to tie for 47th at 4-over-par 217 (73-68-76). Stark tallied a pair of birdies in his final round.
- Freshman Tommy Morrison posted a 2-over-par 73 in his final round to tie for 54th at 6-over-par 219 (73-73-73). Morrison registered three birdies on Saturday.
- Freshman Keaton Vo, who also competed as an individual, carded a 3-over-par 74 on Saturday to tie for 63rd at 8-over-par 221 (74-73-74). Vo recorded three birdies during his final round.
