No. 11 Men’s Golf earns 4.5-0.5 victory over No. 22 Stanford to conclude NB3 Matchplay

The Texas men and women win the combined team championship at the inaugural event.
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 4.5-0.5 victory against No. 22 Stanford on Wednesday afternoon during the final day of the inaugural NB3 MatchPlay at Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Longhorns concluded the two-day tournament with a 2-0-1 overall record in round-robin match play against New Mexico State, New Mexico and Stanford.
During Wednesday's win over Stanford, Texas received individual victories from junior Tommy Morrison (1-up), junior Christiaan Maas (4&2), junior Luke Potter (4&3) and freshman Daniel Bennett (2&1) along with a tie from sophomore Jack Gilbert. Maas registered a perfect 3-0 mark in his individual match-play contests during the tournament.
Following Wednesday's action, awards were presented to the men's team champion, women's team champion and combined university champion. Teams received 1.0 point for winning a match, 0.5 point for ties and 0 points for losing a match.
New Mexico State claimed the men's team championship with 10.5 points, while the Longhorns were second at 10.0 and followed by New Mexico (6.5) and Stanford (3.0). Texas earned the combined university championship with a total of 21.5 points, placing ahead of New Mexico State (14.0), Stanford (13.5) and New Mexico (11.0). UT also claimed the women's team championship with 11.5 points, finishing ahead of No. 1 Stanford (10.5).
The NB3 Matchplay marked the final fall tournament for the Longhorns. Texas will return to the course on Jan. 27-29 at the Southwestern Invitational at Westlake Village, Calif.

- Junior Tommy Morrison earned a 1-up victory over TK Chantananuwat on Wednesday and posted a 2-1 overall mark during the tournament. Chantananuwat held a 2-up cushion through 12 holes, before Morrison rallied to win holes 13 and 14 to tie the match. Morrison then won hole 17 and halved the finishing 18th hole to close out the 1-up win.
- Junior Christiaan Maas registered a 4&2 win against Jay Leng on Wednesday and tallied a perfect 3-0 record at the tournament. Leng held a 1-up lead through seven holes, but Maas responded with wins on holes 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 to grab a 4-up cushion. Leng won hole 15 to pull to within 3-up, before Maas won hole 16 to finish off the 4&2 victory.
- Junior Luke Potter claimed a 4&3 victory over Logan Kim on Wednesday. Potter won holes 2, 7, 8 and 13 to build a 4-up cushion. After Kim won his only hole of the match on 14, Potter answered with a win on 15 to close out the 4&3 victory.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 2&1 win against Ethan Gao on Wednesday and tallied a 2-1 mark at the tournament. Bennett won holes 1 and 3 to take a 2-up cushion, before Gao won hole 6 to cut the lead to 1-up. Bennett won hole 9 and Gao answered by winning hole 11 to again keep the advantage to 1-up. Bennett won hole 15 to move to 2-up and halved holes 16 and 17 to finish off the 2&1 victory.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert tied Nathan Wang on Wednesday and posted a 1-0-2 record during the tournament. Gilbert won each of the first two holes to take a 2-up advantage, before Wang won holes 8, 10 and 13 to grab a 1-up lead. Gilbert responded with a win on 14 and the two players halved the remaining four holes to finish in a tie.
