No. 5 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at Southwestern Invitational

Maas fires a 2-under 69 on Monday and is tied for fifth in the individual standings.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 5-over-par 289 on Monday to rest in sixth place after the opening round of the Southwestern Invitational at Sherwood Country Club. Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 2-under 69 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings.
In addition to Maas' effort, Texas counted scores from freshman Daniel Bennett (1-over 72), junior Luke Potter (2-over 73) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (4-over 75) on Monday.
San Diego State registered an 8-under 276 and holds a six-stroke lead in the team standings. No. 15 Vanderbilt is second at 2-under 282, while USC is third at 1-under 283. The 14-team field features seven squads in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Nov. 13).
UNLV's Wyatt Plattner and Ivan Barahona of San Jose State share the individual lead after the first 18 holes, as each posted a 5-under 66 in the opening round. San Diego State's Nathan Sampson is third at 4-under 67. Maas is among a group of five players who are all tied for fifth at 2-under 69.
The Southwestern Invitational will continue with 18 holes on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Texas will be paired with San Jose State and UNLV for Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 11:55 a.m. Central (9:55 a.m. Pacific) off the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Christiaan Maas posted a 2-under 69 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings. After making the turn at 1-over, Maas made an eagle on the par-five 11th hole and followed with birdies on 12 and 16 to move to 3-under before closing his round with a bogey on 18 to finish at 2-under.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett registered a 1-over 72 and is tied for 23rd after the opening day. Bennett was 2-over through his first 10 holes before making a birdie on 11, bogey on 16 and closing with a birdie on 18 to finish at 1-over.
- Junior Luke Potter tallied a 2-over 73 and is tied for 29th place. Potter was 2-over through 11 holes before making birdies on 12 and 14 sandwiched around a double-bogey on 13.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert fired a 4-over 75 and is tied for 42nd. Gilbert's opening round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 11th hole and a birdie on 16.
- Junior Tommy Morrison posted a 6-over 77 and is tied for 58th place. Morrison carded three birdies (holes 4, 11 and 14) in his opening round.
