Texas set to make third championship final appearance in last four seasons
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Texas women's soccer program will look to become the first athletic program at Texas to win a SEC championship since the university joined the new league on July 1, 2024, as the third-seeded Longhorns will do battle against the fourth-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks in the final of the 2024 SEC Soccer Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10.
TELEVISION: Sunday afternoon's match can be viewed on the SEC Network with Mike Watts (play by play) and Jill Loyden (analyst) on the call.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Texas and South Carolina have only met once on the pitch prior to Sunday's meeting and that occurred on Nov. 11, 2011, when the two played in Columbia, South Carolina in a first-round NCAA Tournament match that the Gamecocks won 1-0.
- Sunday's match against South Carolina will mark just the third all-time match versus the Gamecocks in the SEC Tournament for Texas head coach Angela Kelly.
- Kelly's Tennessee-led squad beat South Carolina, 1-0, in the first round of the 2003 SEC Tournament, before the Gamecocks upended the Volunteers, 2-0, in the first round of the league's 2007 postseason tournament.
- Kelly will be looking for her first win over South Carolina since Sept. 27, 2007, when her Volunteers beat the Gamecocks, 3-2, in overtime.
- Kelly has not beaten the Gamecocks in regular season since Oct. 2, 2005, when Tennessee knocked off South Carolina, 2-1, in Knoxville, Tenn.
- Overall, Kelly is 7-5-2 all time against South Carolina.
KICKING OFF:
- Sunday's match will mark the third conference tournament final over the last four seasons for the Texas Longhorns.
- 2021 – L, 1-2, vs. TCU
- 2023 – W, 3-1, vs. BYU
- 2024 – TBD vs. South Carolina
- Texas head coach Angela Kelly will be looking for her fifth all-time SEC Tournament championship when the Longhorns take the pitch on Sunday afternoon.
- She won four conference championships during her tenure at Tennessee (2002, 2003, 2005, 2008).
- Additionally, she won a Big 12 tournament championship in 2023 to push her all-time conference tournament championship total to five prior to Sunday's meeting against South Carolina.
- She won four conference championships during her tenure at Tennessee (2002, 2003, 2005, 2008).
- A win on Sunday would award Texas senior goalkeeper Mia Justus her third conference championship in three different conferences throughout her four-year collegiate soccer:
- 2021 – ACC at Florida State
- 2023 – Big 12 at Texas
- 2024 – SEC at Texas
- With her next start, senior midfielder Lexi Missimo will appear in the starting lineup for the 87th time in her career, tying for ninth on the program's all-time career matches played list.
- A win on Sunday would mark just the second time in program history that the Texas women's soccer program has won a conference postseason tournament in back-to-back seasons.
- The Longhorns won Big 12 postseason conference tournaments in back-to-back seasons in 2006 and 2007.
