Lebarron Johnson Jr. tossed eight shutout innings with eight strikeouts to lead the Longhorns.

AUSTIN, Texas – Lebarron Johnson Jr. pitched eight shutout innings to lead No. 16 Texas Baseball to a 2-0 win over Cal Poly on Friday in front of a crowd of 7,845 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (4-1) will go for the series win over the Mustangs on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Johnson was outstanding on the mound, tossing eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits and two walks in his eight innings of work.

Johnson faced very little trouble in the game, never allowing more than one baserunner in an inning and retiring the final eight batters he faced.

Gage Boehm slammed the door with the scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save at Texas.

The Longhorns 1-2 punch of Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell had another big night to lead the Texas offense. Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored, while Powell was 1-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

The Longhorns scratched out the first run of the ballgame in the fifth to grab a 1-0 lead. Dee Kennedy got things started with a one-out walk, moved to second on a balk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Thomas then drove him in with an infield single to third base for the game's first run.

Texas got a big insurance run in the eighth when Thomas and Powell hit back-to-back doubles to make the score 2-0.

The shutout for Texas pitching was the first since April 19, 2023 against Abilene Christian in seven innings and the last nine-inning shutout came against Oklahoma State on May 25, 2022 in the Big 12 Tournament.
