Men's Golf's Maas earns runner-up finish at inaugural Africa Amateur Championship

MALELANE, South Africa — University of Texas Men's Golf sophomore Christiaan Maas recorded a runner-up finish at the inaugural Africa Amateur Championship on Sunday at Leopard Creek Golf Club. Maas advanced into a three-man playoff, before Altin Van der Merwe made birdie on the first playoff hole to capture the title.
Maas registered a 72-hole total of 13-under-par 275 (71-69-63-72) during the four-day event. His 9-under 63 during Saturday's third round tied the course record for lowest 18-hole score. Maas is No. 13 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings (Feb. 21).
The Africa Amateur Championship featured 72 men from the Africa region competing in a 72-hole stroke play format. The winner of the tournament received an exemption into the 152nd Open at Royal Troon later this year.
