Texas rallies from four-run deficit, closeout home tournament with a win
AUSTIN, Texas – Less than 15 hours following an emotional roller coaster ride with No. 12/13 Stanford, The University of Texas softball program was back in the win column — for the 12th time on the season — following a 5-4 victory over Louisiana on Sunday afternoon.
After Louisiana (7-9) scored four first inning runs to begin Sunday's contest, Texas (12-1) didn't waste any time chipping away after Katie Stewart scored the first of her two runs on the day after Ragin' Cajun shortstop Cecilia Vasquez was unable to field a groundball off the bat of Viviana Martinez. The momentum carried over for the Longhorns as Mac Morgan (3-0) tossed the first of her 3.1 consecutive scoreless innings in the second.
The UT bats set the tone in the bottom of the second as Leighann Goode, Ashton Maloney, Stewart and Reese Atwood were all credited with a single. Maloney reaching base ultimately led to her stealing home for Texas' second run after Mia Scott, who was attempting to steal second base but retreated safely to first, drew a throw from Louisiana catcher Victoria Valdez.
Two batters later, Atwood tied the game with a two-run single to right field.
The 4-4 tie stood for two innings until Stewart sent a 1-0 pitch from Denali Loecker into right field to score Scott, who was credited with a two-out triple earlier in the frame and push the Longhorns ahead 5-4.
The trio of Morgan, Citlaly Gutierrez and Teagan Kavan (S, 1) went on to toss three consecutive scoreless innings to close out the game and conclude the weekend's Lone Star State Invitational.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I think coming out of the weekend with four wins in five games is really good. Obviously, we could've gotten a win last night, but we didn't play our best. I thought there was a little bit of a hangover effect coming out today, but we were able to hang on after being down 4-0. I'm real proud of how the ladies fought back and showed some grit today."
GAME NOTES
- With her two-run single in the bottom of the second, Reese Atwood has driven in at least one run is 12 of Texas' 13 games through this point of the 2024 campaign.
- Additionally, Atwood has been credited with 10 multi-RBI games in 13 of the Longhorns' games this season.

- Atwood's teammate Katie Stewart turned in her second career three-hit game — matching her career high set against Houston Christian earlier in the week on Wednesday, Feb. 21 — on Sunday afternoon.
- By appearing in and throwing the final inning of Sunday's game, Texas freshman right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan extended her career-long streak of consecutive scoreless innings tossed to 15 straight frames.
- By closing the door on Louisiana's offense in the seventh inning, Kavan earned the first save in her young collegiate softball career on the Forty Acres.
