Senior Taisiya Pachkaleva helped Texas to victories against two ranked opponents with a combined 4-0 singles and doubles record.
Austin – Texas Women's Tennis senior Taisiya Pachkaleva has been named Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 4, the conference announced Tuesday. It marks the first time she has earned a weekly honor in her Big 12 career.
Pachkaleva went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles leading Texas to two ranked wins – 7-0 over No. 25 Wisconsin and 4-3 over No. 4 Georgia – in a span of just over 24 hours. Both doubles victories came at No. 1 against top-60 opponents, including a strong 6-1 win over No. 50 Maria Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova of Wisconsin, and a 6-3 win over No. 58 Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia that clinched the doubles point in that match.
Pachkaleva also clinched the overall match against the Bulldogs with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Guillermina Grant at No. 5 in the one-point UT victory. Over the end of the second set and the beginning of the third versus Grant, the Texas senior won 9-of-10 games to go from trailing, 4-2, in the second to a 6-4 win and establishing a 5-1 lead in the third.
Against the Badgers, Pachkaleva and partner Sabina Zeynalova were first off in doubles, while Pachkaleva's 7-5, 6-0 singles victory over Kaja Jacobson at No. 5 provided the Longhorns a 3-0 overall lead. Pachkaleva closed that match on an 8-0 run to finish the first set and sweep the second. She is now 3-0 in singles in dual match play this season and has won four-straight singles contests overall, while she and Zeynalova are 5-0 in doubles in dual matches.
Pachkaleva and the Longhorns now head to Seattle to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships from Feb. 9-12.
