AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball bounced back with a big 10-2 win over Baylor to even the series on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (14-9, 3-2) will go for the series win over the Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Ace Whitehead pitched a complete game in his first ever weekend start, tossing all nine innings and allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out five batters and issued one walk to pick up his second win of the season.
After allowing a run in the second and a run in the third, Whitehead went on to retire 13-straight batters from the fourth into the eighth inning. He then retired the final five batters he faced, allowing just one baserunner over the final six innings.
Jared Thomas had a huge day at the plate in support of Whitehead, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. He homered in the second and eighth innings.
Rylan Galvan made his return behind the plate and went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, one RBI and three runs scored. Max Belyeu also finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Will Gasparino got the Longhorns out to a great start, blasting a first inning three-run homer to give Texas an early 4-0 lead. Thomas started the game with a single on an 11-pitch at-bat, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Max Belyeu in front of Gasparino's homer.
Baylor got a run back in the top of the second after starting the inning with a double and using a sacrifice fly to cut the Texas lead to 4-1.
Thomas added to the lead in the bottom of the second with his first homer of the game.
The Bears got another run across in the third to cut the lead to 5-2 but Porter Brown kept it to one run with a great throw home to cut down a runner at the plate.
The Longhorns tacked on a run in the fourth after Galvan doubled and Thomas continued his great day at the plate with an RBI single.
Texas added to the lead again in the sixth inning, scoring yet another two out run after Dee Kennedy doubled to drive in Galvan from second base to make the score 7-2.
Three more Texas runs in the eighth inning put the game away for good, as Galvan and Thomas both homered to make the score 10-2.
