The Longhorns got some timely hits and a great pitching performance to clinch the series.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Texas Baseball picked up a huge 6-3 win to take the series over No. 23 Kansas State on Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.
The Longhorns (17-11, 6-3) got another great pitching performance from Max Grubbs for six innings and Andre Duplantier II slammed the door in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Grubbs put together another quality start, pitching six innings and only allowing one unearned run on six hits. He tied his career high with five strikeouts and only allowed one walk to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Longhorns opened the scoring in the third inning after Jalin Flores doubled, Max Belyeu walked and Kimble Schuessler drove them both in with a two-run double to make the score 2-0.
Texas took advantage of some free passes in the fourth to add two more runs and go up 4-0. Rylan Galvan walked and Dee Kennedy singled to put two runners on before a groundout moved them into scoring position. Galvan then scored on an errant throw for the first run and Flores drove in the second with a sacrifice fly.
Kansas State got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth to trim the lead to 4-1 but Grubbs was able to limit the damage.
The Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh before Texas turned to Gage Boehm out of the bullpen, who got a big strikeout to end the threat.
Kansas State scratched out two more runs in the eighth to cut the lead down to 4-3 and the Longhorns had to turn to Andre Duplantier II to get out of the jam.
Texas had an answer in the top of the ninth, as Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell hit back-to-back solo home runs to extend the lead to 6-3.
Duplantier then slammed the door in the ninth and ended the ballgame with a strikeout.
Texas returns home this week to take on Abilene Christian on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before welcoming BYU for a weekend series starting on Thursday.
