Baseball bounces back with 6-5 win over Houston
04.13.2024 | Baseball
HOUSTON, Texas – Dee Kennedy hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth to give Texas Baseball a big bounce-back win over Houston, 6-5, to even the series on Saturday Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The Longhorns (21-15, 8-6) will go for the series win over the Cougars on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Kennedy went 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of solo home runs, including the game-winner in the top of the ninth.
Kimble Schuessler had a career day offensively going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI. Peyton Powell also had a big day going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
Gage Boehm pitched two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game and pick up his third win of the season. Andre Duplantier II went 2 1/3 innings and allowed two solo home runs. Ace Whitehead started and pitched 4 2/3 innings with three runs allowed.
The Longhorns scored a run in the first, doing all the damage with two outs. Powell got things started with a two-out single before Jalin Flores walked to put two runners on. Schuessler then drove in Powell with an RBI single that dropped into center field.
Will Gasparino helped keep the slim lead intact early in the game, robbing a would-be home run to straight-away center in the second inning.
Texas tacked onto the lead in the second with two runs on three hits to make the score 3-0. Powell singled for the second time in the game and Flores doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Schuessler drove in his second run of the game with another hit that dropped into the outfield. The second run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Max Belyeu.
Houston came back to tie the game up 3-3 with a string of hits in the bottom of the third. The game-tying hit was a fly ball down the left field line that just fell in fair territory.
The Longhorns retook the lead in the fifth inning, with Kennedy and Schuessler both launching solo home runs to make the score 5-3.
Houston threatened in the bottom of the fifth with two on and two out but Andre Duplantier II came in to get out of the jam.
The Cougars were able to get to Duplantier in the seventh inning with two solo home runs to tie the game up 5-5. The runs off of Duplantier snapped a stretch of 11 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched for him.
The Longhorn defense helped keep the game knotted at five in the bottom half of the eighth. With a runner on first and one out, Tommy Farmer made a running catch at the warning track in left-center and threw it back in to Flores who made a great relay throw to first to record the inning ending double play.
Kennedy blasted his second go-ahead homer of the game in the top of the ninth but this one would be good for the game-winning run.
