No. 1/1 Softball sets program record with 18th conference victory
04.26.2024 | Softball
Texas earns 40th victory in 46 games so far in the 2024 campaign.
AUSTIN, Texas – Another historic milestone has been added to a rapidly developing season for The University of Texas' softball program as the Longhorns earned a program-best 18th Big 12 Conference win with a 5-2 victory against Iowa State on Friday night. The win broke a tie with the 2002 squad for the most conference wins in a single season at 17.
In search of more gem to add to her season's reśumé, Texas freshman Teagan Kavan (14-2) took the circle to begin Friday's game and tossed five consecutive scoreless innings of one-hit softball to allow her team's offense to get going. And it did in the bottom of the third when Mia Scott belted a 3-1 pitch 272 feet for her fifth home run of the season and give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead.
An inning later, Texas, again, used the long ball to its advance when Katie Stewart sent a 1-2 pitch 263 feet for a two-run home run that also scored Reese Atwood and extended her team's lead out to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Longhorns were knocking on the door of a run-rule victory following run-scoring at bats from Viviana Martinez and Stewart to make it 5-0. As Katie Cimusz, who hit two home runs last weekend in Lawrence, stepped to the plate, she represented the game-ending run as Stewart and Alyssa Washington stood on base. But a pop-up ended the inning and extended the game.
As a result of the game extending, Iowa State was able to score two sixth-inning runs and threatened for more with the bases loaded and two away, but Kavan ended the threat with her eighth strikeout on the evening.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"(I left Teagan Kavan) in (there in the sixth inning), because she needs to work through those types of situations. She was dominate and doing a great job early on, but she can't push the 'help' button all the time. But I like the way she got that last out and then Mac (Morgan) came in and did a good job as well. It was scary, though, knowing (Iowa State) was just one swing away — with the wind blowing out — from tying the game."6
FROM FRESHMAN FIRST BASE KATIE STEWART
"You know, Coach (Mike) White always just kind of mentions that we should be playing for us and not really worry about what everyone else is doing. So, we really just try to take everything just one game at a time and working from there. If (a championship) comes at the end of the season, then it comes."
