No. 1/1 Softball’s Atwood sets program’s single-season RBI record
04.27.2024 | Softball
A fourth-inning, two-run home run in Saturday’s first game sets Reese Atwood apart in Texas history
AUSTIN, Texas – It was only a matter of when, not if Reese Atwood would break Texas' single-season runs batted in (RBI) record. And that when occurred during the Longhorns' 8-0 thumbing of Iowa State in game one of Saturday's twin bill, before, the freshly-minted record was re-written, again, during UT's 9-1 victory in the series finale.
After tying the record in the top of the fifth inning of Texas' 7-0 win at Kansas six days ago, Atwood went 10 at bats sitting at 66 RBI before sending a 0-1 pitch in the bottom of the fourth 251 feet for a two-out, two-run home run to double the Longhorns' lead from 2-0 to 4-0. The home run scored not only Atwood but also Mia Scott, who is the program's active leaders in career runs scored with 165, from second.
Even though Atwood was unable to have another plate appearance during the game — because the Longhorn offense scored four runs an inning later to end the game in five innings — she started game two with RBI number 69 with a double to the right-center field gap to score Scott and give Texas an early 1-0 lead.
Atwood returned to the dish the following inning — with the Longhorns already holding onto a 3-0 lead — and capped a four-run, five-hit second inning with a one-out, solo home run to give her 17 on the season, one back of tying the program's single-season home run record.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"What a great accomplishment that was for Reese; to set a record with still a bunch of games to go. I know she had some struggles there through the middle of the season, but she's getting hot right now and the right time."
FROM SOPHOMORE CATCHER REESE ATWOOD
"I think (breaking the program's single-season record is pretty cool) and just being able to have my name in the record books. But when we come back out on the field next weekend at Texas Tech, we just have to stay focused to win each game."
