The Longhorns held on for a narrow 6-3 win in the series opener on Friday night.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Texas Baseball held on for a 6-3 win over UCF in the series opener on Friday at John Euliano Park. The Longhorns (31-19, 16-9) will now try to clinch the series over the Knights on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT.

Max Grubbs started and pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. He struck out five batters and picked up his fifth win of the season. Gage Boehm tossed two shutout innings of relief to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Jared Thomas went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Porter Brown was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Will Gasparino finished 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI groundout.

UCF scored a run in the first inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to grab an early 1-0 lead.

The Longhorns quickly answered in the top of the second to tie the game up, 1-1. Kimble Schuessler started the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Gasparino.

Texas then grabbed the lead in the fourth inning when Gasparino hit a two-run homer to make the score 3-1.

The Longhorns were able to tack on an additional run in the sixth inning, after Brown singled to start the inning and came around to score on an RBI squeeze bunt by Jack O'Dowd.

The Knights got two runs back in the seventh inning to cut the Texas lead down to just 4-3. Both of the runs in the inning off of Andre Duplantier II were unearned.

Texas got a pair of big insurance runs in the top of the ninth to expand the lead to 6-3. Dee Kennedy started things with an infield single before Jared Thomas hammered a double into the gap in right-center. After a pitching change, Jalin Flores delivered a clutch two-run single to left field.
