The Longhorns will play in an elimination game against Cincinnati on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 24 Texas Baseball dropped its opener in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship to Texas Tech, 6-4, on Tuesday at Globe Life Field.

The Longhorns (35-21) will now face an elimination game against Cincinnati on Wednesday at 4 p.m. This will be the first ever meeting between the two baseball programs.

Ace Whitehead started and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout. He departed with the game knotted at 4-all and did not factor in the decision.

Andre Duplantier II pitched four innings out of the bullpen and struck out six batters. He was charged with the loss after allowing a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.

Jack O'Dowd went 3-for-3 at the plate with a homer, a double, one RBI and one run scored. Max Belyeu was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Jared Thomas led off the ballgame with a solo home run to give Texas an early 1-0 lead. The Red Raiders quickly tied the game up in the top of the second inning with a solo homer of their own.

Texas retook the lead in the third inning, starting with a solo homer by O'Dowd to leadoff the inning. After the first out of the inning, Jalin Flores was hit by a pitch and Peyton Powell singled to put two runners on. Belyeu then lined a two-run double down the right field line to make the score 4-1.

Texas Tech once again came right back in the top of the fourth to tie the game up 4-4 with a three-run homer.

Will Gasparino kept the game tied in the fifth inning by spectacularly robbing a home run in straight-away center field.

The game remained tied until the ninth inning when Texas Tech took its first lead of the game with a two-run homer down the left field line.
