ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 24 Texas Baseball was eliminated from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with an 8-7 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday at Globe Life Field.
The Longhorns (35-22) will learn their NCAA Tournament selection fate on Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. The selection show will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Max Belyeu went 2-for-5 at the plate with a two-run homer, while Rylan Galvan finished 3-for-5 with a double and one run scored.
Cincinnati grabbed an early lead with one run on three hits in the top of the first off of starer Charlie Hurley. The senior right-hander pitched three innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
The Bearcats loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the fourth inning before Texas turned to Gage Boehm out of the bullpen. Boehm was able to get a double play and a strikeout to hold Cincinnati to just one run in the inning.
The Longhorns' offense then had a response in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 3-2 lead with three runs on five hits. Peyton Powell got things started with a single into left field before Belyeu followed up by crushing a two-run homer to right field to tie the game. After back-to-back infield singles by Porter Brown and Rylan Galvan, Will Gasparino lined a go-ahead RBI double down the left field line.
Cincinnati took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Longhorns in the sixth to retake the lead, 4-3, on a pair of unearned runs.
The Bearcats put the game away in the eighth inning with a three-run homer and another run scored on an error to make the score 8-3.
The Longhorns got four runs right back in the eighth inning, starting with Dee Kennedy getting hit by a pitch and scoring on an RBI groundout. Jared Thomas walked with two outs and Jalin Flores drove him in with an RBI double. Peyton Powell then followed with an RBI single to cut the lead down to 8-7.
Texas had a chance in the bottom of the ninth as Kimble Schuessler singled to start the inning and pinch-runner Jayden Duplantier got to second base but he was stranded there to end the game.
