COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas Baseball used a seven-run fifth inning to pick up a 12-5 win over Louisiana in the opener of the NCAA College Station Regional on Friday at Blue Bell Park. The Longhorns (36-22) advance to the winner's bracket and will face Texas A&M on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Jalin Flores went 2-for-4 at the plate and provided arguably the biggest hit of the day, with a grand slam as part of the seven run fifth inning. The grand slam was his third of the year, the fourth of his career and his second in an NCAA Regional after hitting a slam against Miami last season.
Kimble Schuessler had a big day offensively as well, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two walks and three runs scored. Three other Longhorns had two hits in the game and all nine starters had at least one hit.
Max Grubbs started and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on five hits to pick up his sixth win of the season. He struck out the side in the first inning and finished with four strikeouts in the game.
Cade O'Hara pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and Andre Duplantier II finished the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Louisiana opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a two-out solo home run off of Grubbs. The Ragin' Cajuns then added to the lead in the third inning with another solo home run to make the score 2-0.
The Longhorns jumped in front in the fourth inning, using five-consecutive one-out hits to take a 3-2 lead. Schuessler hit his second double of the game to get things started before Porter Brown legged out an infield single to put runners on the corners. Rylan Galvan then got Texas on the board with an RBI double off the wall in left field. Will Gasparino legged out an infield single to load the bases before Dee Kennedy drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single to left field.
Grubbs got into a jam in the bottom of the fourth but managed to get a huge groundball double play to get out of the inning with the 3-2 lead intact.
Texas put together a huge seven-run fifth inning to extend the lead out to 10-2. The Longhorns plated the first run after the first four batters reached base, as Belyeu and Schuessler and Brown and Galvan walked. Kennedy reached on an error to drive in another run and Jared Thomas hit an RBI single to keep the bases loaded. Flores followed up by crushing a grand slam to left field for the biggest blow of the inning.
Louisiana got two of the runs right back in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of hits and a pair of free-passes to trim the Texas lead to 10-4.
The Longhorns got two more runs across in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded two-run single by Gasparino.
The Ragin' Cajuns picked up a run in the seventh inning off of O'Hara to cut the lead to 12-5.
