Rising junior becomes first American to win prestigious title and earns spot in next month’s The Open at Troon.
OLDVEJ, Denmark — University of Texas rising junior Tommy Morrison captured the 2024 European Amateur Championship in a three-way playoff on Saturday at The Scandinavian. With the victory, Morrison earns a spot in the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon on July 18-21.
Morrison, who recently completed his sophomore season at Texas, becomes the first American player to win the prestigious title since the tourney began in 1986. He joins an elite list of champions that includes Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rory McIlroy (2006) along with former Longhorn Christoffer Bring of Denmark in 2021. Recent Ryder Cup stars Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland narrowly missed out on the title, as each finished as runner-up in 2021 and 2018, respectively.
Morrison registered a 5-under 67 in Saturday's final round to post a 72-hole score of 9-under-par 279 (68-70-74-67). He advanced to a three-way playoff that included Arizona State rising senior Preston Summerhays and Ireland's Max Kennedy.
During the three-hole aggregate score playoff, all three players recorded pars on the first hole, the par-three No. 9. On the second hole, the par-four No. 10, Morrison and Kennedy each made birdies while Summerhays recorded a bogey. On the third and final hole, the par-five No. 18, Kennedy posted a par before Morrison sunk a short birdie putt to clinch his victory.
The 37th European Amateur featured a field of 144 players representing 41 different countries.
