Maas fires a 3-under 69 and the Longhorns post the best round of Sunday’s morning wave with a 7-under 281.
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded seven birdies over its final four holes to record a 7-under 281 on Sunday and rest in second place after the third round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Senior Christiaan Maas registered a 3-under 69 to pace the Longhorns who posted the lowest team score of Sunday's morning wave.
In addition to Maas' effort, Texas also counted scores in the third round from senior Luke Potter (2-under 70), senior Tommy Morrison (2-under 70) and graduate Matt Comegys (even-par 72).
The field was cut to the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals on non-advancing teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, June 1, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
No. 1 Auburn holds a three-stroke lead in the team standings with a 54-hole total of 22-under 842 (284-272-286). Texas is second at 19-under 845 (287-277-281), and No. 11 Vanderbilt is third at 9-under 855 (287-277-291). The trio of No. 5 Oklahoma State (295-274-287), No. 12 Arizona (287-285-284) and No. 30 UCLA are tied for fourth at 8-under 856.
"We put ourselves in really good position with today's round," said Texas head coach John Fields. "We'll be chasing Auburn tomorrow and will try to win the medal (low score after stroke play). I'm really happy with the guys' performance today. The hole locations were very difficult, and the golf course played a little bit harder than it did yesterday. Shooting 7-under par was an outstanding score, and I'm really happy for the guys."
"Our closing stretch (last four holes) shows how resilient this team is," Fields said. "We play a schedule dedicated to trying to get here and be ready for this event. They are resilient and they work hard to be that way. I think our schedule does a great job preparing them, playing hard golf courses against the best teams. This is nothing new for us, and I know they're excited about coming out here and playing tomorrow."
Oklahoma State's Preston Stout tallied a 7-under 65 in the third round and holds a one-stroke cushion in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 11-under 205 (73-67-65). The trio of Arizona's Filip Jakubcik (68-66-72), William Jennings of Alabama (66-70-70) and Vanderbilt's Will Hartman (70-68-68) are tied for second at 10-under 206. Morrison is tied for seventh at 6-under 210 (69-71-70), and Potter is tied for 11th at 5-under 211 (68-73-70).
In Monday's fourth round, the Longhorns will be paired with Auburn and Vanderbilt. Tee times will begin at 2:20 p.m. CT (12:20 p.m. PT) from hole 1.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, June 2, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3.
