Rising junior makes the 36-hole cut and ties for the second-lowest finish by an amateur.
TROON, Scotland — University of Texas rising junior Tommy Morrison posted a 2-over 73 on Sunday at historic Royal Troon Golf Course to conclude play at the 152nd Open Championship. Morrison posted a four-round score of 11-over 295 (75-73-74-73) to finish in a tie for second among the 12 amateurs in the 152-player field.
Morrison, who qualified for The Open Championship by virtue of his victory at the European Amateur Championship in late June, placed in a tie for 60th overall at The Open with his 72-hole score of 11-over par. One of just four amateur players and 80 total individuals to make the 36-hole cut at Royal Troon, Morrison and Jacob Skov Olesen (11-over) each finished three strokes behind Calum Scott at 8-over 292 (71-75-70-76) in the competition for the Silver Medal, awarded to the low amateur at The Open.
Morrison, who recently completed his sophomore season at Texas, became the first American player to win the prestigious European Amateur Championship since the tourney began in 1986. He joined an elite list of champions that includes Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rory McIlroy (2006) along with former Longhorn Christoffer Bring of Denmark in 2021. Recent Ryder Cup stars Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland narrowly missed out on the title, as each finished as runner-up in 2021 and 2018, respectively.
Morrison is set to continue his summer amateur tournament schedule at the Western Amateur Championship on July 29-August 3 at Moraine Country Club in Dayton, Ohio. He will conclude his summer schedule at the U.S. Amateur Championship on August 12-18 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
