The Longhorns maintain undefeated record following Sunday’s contest against the Hawkeyes
AUSTIN, Texas – On a blister, 95-degree afternoon in the capital of the Lone Star State, neither Texas nor Iowa managed to find the back of the net against the other's defense as Sunday's contest between two top 25 teams ended in a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.
Even though neither offense broke through in the scoring column of the scoreboard, it wasn't without opportunities, though, as the two teams combined for 27 shots — 10 on goal — with each goalkeeper being credited with four-or-more saves, including Iowa's Macy Enneking who had to make five throughout the match's first 45 minutes.
Texas' Lexi Missimo, Trinity Byars, Holly Ward and Amalia Villarreal record three shots apiece during the action. And while the Longhorn offense was looking to put the ball into the back of the net, the UT defense was doing its job halting any potential Iowa offensive threat.
Of Iowa's four shots during the second half, three came within an 18-minute span from 49:32 to 67:01 of the second half. The Hawkeyes' next shot didn't come until the 84:40 mark. A similar pattern was create during the first half as three of Iowa's four shots occurred between the 1:38 mark and 8:18, before the final attempt of the first half happened at 28:52.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"I thought our back line did great, so I was pleased with that. I think it's still early in the season. We had good looks that we wanted to find the back of the net, so know we just have to execute that moving forward."
MATCH NOTES
- Sunday's action marked the 70th career collegiate soccer match for the Texas All-American duo of Trinity Byars and Lexi Missimo.
- With her clean sheet against Iowa, Texas goalkeeper Mia Justus now has already been credited with three clean sheets on the season, a third of her season total from 2023 which was tied for the second most in the program's single-season history.
- Despite not finding the back of the net against the Hawkeye defense, the Texas offense continued its ability to create a potential scoring opportunity as the Longhorns extended a streak of double-digit shots in a match to 28 consecutive, dating back to the season finale of the 2022 campaign when UT only had seven shots at Duke on Nov. 18, 2022.
