The Longhorns picked up their second win in as many days to start the 2025 season.
Austin – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis picked up its second win in as many days to start the 2025 season with a 7-0 sweep of ACU at the Texas Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Longhorns swept the doubles matches and earned singles victories from sophomore No. 116 Lucas Brown at No. 4, junior No. 2 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 6, junior No. 20 Jonah Braswell at No. 3, freshman Oliver Ojakaar at No. 5, and senior Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 2.
After the Longhorns won the doubles point, Brown got things going quickly in singles with a double bagel victory over Alejandro Verdasco, 6-0, 6-0. The match reached deuce in just three games, including the first two where Brown broke and held. The other was for a 5-0 lead in the second set.
Gorzny then extended the Texas lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dennis Dutine. Dutine was able to hold in the third game on a deuce point to trail, 2-1, but it was all Gorzny other than that as he broke on a deuce point for the 6-1 win. The second set had four deuce points that the players split. After Gorzny held and broke for a 2-0 lead, the players exchanged deuce-point breaks and Gorzny held again for a 4-1 lead. They again traded deuce-points wins, this time for holds before Gorzny broke again for the match.
The clinch was then provided by Eriksson, who downed Benjamin McDonald, 6-1, 6-3. Eriksson jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including a deuce-point break in the opening game before McDonald got on the board with a deuce-point hold. Eriksson followed with one himself to start another 4-0 run that gave him a 2-0 lead in the second set. McDonald broke on a deuce point in the next game to start a 3-0 run that gave him a brief lead, but Eriksson put the set back on track with a deuce-point break that began another 4-0 run to the finish, which he capped with a deuce-point hold for the match and a 4-0 Texas lead.
The teams played out the remaining matches, with Braswell finishing first out of those with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Matheus Lima. Braswell won five of the first six games of the match except for a deuce-point hold by Lima in the third game. He picked up another to get within 5-2, but Braswell serve out the set from there. The players exchanged breaks to start the second set, and after Lima held on another deuce point for a 2-1 lead, Braswell took it from there with a 5-0 run that gave the Longhorns a 5-0 lead.
On court 5, Ojakaar completed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Martin Delnido. Ojakaar broke first on a deuce point for a 2-1 lead, and although Delnido broke back, Ojakaar took four-straight games for the set. In the second, the first four games were on serve until Ojakaar broke first for a 3-2 lead and then consolidated on a deuce-point for 4-2. Delnido got one game back on serve, but Ojakaar closed from there with a hold and a break for a 6-0 lead for Texas.
That left it to Bailly to close out the 7-0 sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tomas Tischner. Bailly jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including a deuce-point break for 3-0. He forced another deuce point on Tischner's next serve, but this time Tischner held for his only game of the set as Bailly held and broke to win. The players exchanged deuce-point breaks to start the second set, but Bailly's would be the start of a 5-0 run to a 5-1 lead. He had match point in the next game on a deuce point, but Tischner was able to break to stay alive and then held to cut the deficit to 5-3. Bailly's following service game also went to deuce, but this time Bailly held for the win.
Earlier in doubles, Brown secured the first leg of a perfect day of 6-0 sets when combined with his singles match, as he and Braswell swept McDonald and Merse Deli at No. 2 to be the first off in doubles. All three of ACU's service games went to deuce, but Texas came out on top in all of them.
Gorzny and Bailly then paired to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Daniel Morozov and Ethan Scribner at No. 1. That match saw none of its game reach deuce as the Longhorns opened on a 3-0 run with a break in the second game. That would be the only break they would need as the rest of the match stayed on serve to the win.
Ojakaar and Eriksson then rounded out doubles play with a 6-1 win over Tischner and Lima at No. 3 in match where five of the seven games went to deuce, including the first four. ACU secured their only game by holding serve to trail, 2-1. Texas took it from there and finished with a deuce-point break for the victory.
Texas will be back on the courts at the Texas Tennis Center on Wednesday, January 15, at 4 p.m. CT against UTRGV.
