No. 5 Men’s Golf climbs into tie for second after day two at Southwestern Invitational

Maas cards a 3-under 68 on Tuesday and is tied for the lead in the individual standings.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 7-under-par 277 on Tuesday to climb into a tie for second place after day two of the Southwestern Invitational at Sherwood Country Club. The Longhorns, who began the day in sixth place, recorded the best team score on Tuesday and enter Wednesday's final round just two strokes off the lead.
Junior Christiaan Maas posted a 3-under 68 in the second round and is tied for the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 5-under 137 (69-68). In addition to Maas' effort, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (2-under 69), freshman Daniel Bennett (1-under 70) and junior Luke Potter (1-under 70) on Tuesday.
UNLV holds the 36-hole team lead at 4-under 564 (285-279), while Texas (289-277) and San Diego State (276-290) are tied for second at 2-under 566. The 14-team field features seven squads in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Nov. 13).
Maas shares the individual lead after 36 holes with UNLV's Zach Little (70-67) at 5-under 137. Four players are tied for third at 3-under 139.
The Southwestern Invitational conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Texas will be paired with UNLV and San Diego State for Wednesday's final round, and tee times will begin at 12:50 p.m. Central (10:50 a.m. Pacific) off the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Christiaan Maas posted a 3-under 68 on Tuesday and is tied for the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 5-under 137 (69-68). Maas registered five birdies in the second round (holes 4, 5, 8, 10 and 11) around a pair of bogeys (holes 7 and 13) en route to his score of 3-under on Tuesday.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett recorded a 1-under 70 in the second round and is tied for ninth with a two-round score of even-par 142 (72-70). Bennett posted a pair of birdies (holes 11 and 14) against just one bogey (hole 12) along with 15 pars on Tuesday.
- Junior Luke Potter fired a 1-under 70 on Tuesday and is tied for 16th with a 36-hole total of 1-over 143 (73-70). Potter tallied four birdies (holes 5, 10, 11 and 15) in the second round.
- Junior Tommy Morrison posted a 2-under 69 in the second round and climbed 24 spots into a tie for 34th with a two-round score of 4-over 146 (77-69). Morrison was 3-under through his first 10 holes on Tuesday with birdies on holes 4, 5 and 10 before back-to-back bogeys on holes 11 and 12 dropped him to 1-under. He responded with five pars and a birdie on hole 17 to finish at 2-under in his second round.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert carded a 3-over 74 on Tuesday and is tied for 46th with a 36-hole total of 7-over 149 (75-74). He tallied three birdies (holes 11, 14 and 15) in the second round.
