No. 5 Men’s Golf claims team title at the Southwestern Invitational

Bennett cards a 4-under 67 on Wednesday and ties for second in the individual standings.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 6-under-par 278 on Wednesday to claim the team title at the Southwestern Invitational at Sherwood Country Club. The Longhorns, who began the day two strokes off the lead in a tie for second place, rallied in the final few holes to post a one-shot victory over runner-up San Diego State.
Texas registered a three-round total of 8-under 844 (289-277-278) to earn its first team championship of the 2024-25 season. The Aztecs finished second at 7-under 845 (276-290-279), while No. 15 Vanderbilt placed third at 4-under 848 (282-287-279). The 14-team field featured seven squads in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Nov. 13).
Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 4-under 67 in Wednesday's final round and placed in a tie for second in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 4-under 209 (72-70-67). In addition to Bennett's effort, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (4-under 67), junior Luke Potter (even-par 71) and junior Christiaan Maas (2-over 73) on Wednesday. Maas tied for fifth in the final individual standings at 3-under 210 (69-68-73).
Wells Williams of Vanderbilt earned the individual title with a three-round total of 5-under 208 (68-71-69). Bennett finished in a three-way tie for second just one stroke off the lead at 4-under along with Justin Hastings of San Diego State and Florida's Ian Gilligan.
The Longhorns return to the course when they travel to Waimea, Hawaii on Feb. 6-8 (Thursday-Saturday) to compete in the Amer Ari Invitational.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 4-under 67 on Wednesday to tie for second place in the individual standings with a 4-under 209 (72-70-67). This marked a collegiate-best finish for Bennett, topping his tie for third at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). Bennett posted a 5-under 30 on the front nine with birdies on holes 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9. He climbed to 6-under with a birdie on 11 before back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 and five-straight pars closed out his 4-under effort.
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a 2-over 73 in the final round to tie for fifth at 3-under 210 (69-68-73). Maas tallied four birdies (holes 3, 11, 12 and 14) on Wednesday.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 4-under 67 on Wednesday to climb 21 spots in the individual standings and tie for 13th at even-par 213 (77-69-67). Even-par at the turn, Morrison caught fire on the back nine with birdies on holes 10, 11, 14 and 18 along with five pars.
- Junior Luke Potter shot an even-par 71 in the final round and tied for 18th at 1-over 214 (73-70-71). Potter made three birdies on Wednesday, including one on the closing 18th hole.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert recorded a 6-over 77 on Wednesday to tie for 61st at 13-over 226 (75-74-77).
