Maas, Morrison named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List

Juniors Christiaan Maas and Tommy Morrison are two of 35 players named to the watch list for nation’s top collegiate men’s golfer.
FORT WORTH, Texas — University of Texas Men's Golf juniors Christiaan Maas and Tommy Morrison have been named to the watch list for the 2025 Ben Hogan Award, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. Maas and Morrison are two of 35 players named to the watch list for the annual award which honors the top men's collegiate golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months.
The list includes 16 seniors, 10 juniors and nine sophomores. Texas is one of nine schools who have multiple golfers on the watch list. An esteemed selection committee, comprised of more than 30 leaders in collegiate, amateur and professional golf, votes during each stage of the process.
Maas, No. 15 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Jan. 28) and No. 6 in the latest NCAA individual rankings by Scoreboard (Nov. 13), has registered a 69.33 scoring average over the first three stroke-play tournaments this season. A two-time All-American at Texas, he boasts a pair of top-10 finishes and has placed in the top-14 in each of his first three appearances this year. Eight of his nine rounds this season have been par or better, including five rounds in the 60s. Maas tied for third at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 20-21) with a 7-under 203 (69-68-66), and he placed sixth at the season-opening Folds of Honor Collegiate (Sept. 9-11) with a 4-under 209 (70-70-69).
Morrison, No. 11 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Jan. 22) and No. 7 in the latest NCAA individual rankings by Scoreboard (Nov. 13), has registered a 69.33 over the first three stroke-play tournaments this season. He has placed in the top-11 in each of his first three appearances this year. Eight of his nine rounds this season have been par or better, including five rounds in the 60s. Morrison posted a collegiate career-best runner-up individual finish at the season-opening Folds of Honor Collegiate (Sept. 9-11) with an 8-under 205 (70-70-65). He tied for 11th at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 20-21) with a 2-under 208 (69-70-69) and tied for 11th at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) with a 1-over 211 (74-68-69). Morrison claimed the 2024 European Amateur Championship (June 26-29) in a three-way playoff at The Scandinavian in Oldvej, Denmark. He became the first American player to in the prestigious title since the tourney began in 1986 and joined an elite list of champions that includes Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rory McIlroy (2006) along with former Longhorn Christoffer Bring of Denmark in 2021. By virtue of his win at the European Amateur, Morrison earned a spot in the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon. He earned the Bronze Medal at The Open Championship (July 18-21), as he tied for second among the 12 amateurs in the 152-player field.
This year's list of 10 semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the watch list, will be unveiled April 17. That group will be paired down to three finalists on May 6. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner on May 19 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, where the winner will be crowned.
The Ben Hogan Award has honored the outstanding amateur collegiate golfer at Colonial Country Club since 2002. Prior to its move to Fort Worth, the original Ben Hogan Trophy, which was awarded on a different list of criteria, was issued at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles beginning in 1990.
