No. 5 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at Amer Ari Invitational

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 16-under-par 272 on Thursday to rest in a tie for seventh place after the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club. Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 6-under 66 and is tied for ninth in the individual standings.
In addition to Bennett's effort, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (5-under 67), junior Luke Potter (3-under 69) and freshman Eduardo Derbez Torres (2-under 70) on Thursday.
No. 9 Oklahoma State registered a 26-under 262 and holds a two-stroke lead in the team standings following the opening round. No. 2 Arizona State is second at 24-under 264, while No. 6 North Carolina and Oregon are tied for third at 20-under 268. The 20-team field features nine squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Feb. 5).
Oklahoma State's Preston Stout holds the individual lead after the first 18 holes after posting a 10-under 62 on Thursday. Eric Doyle of Oregon is second at 9-under 63, while Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State and Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State are tied for third at 8-under 64
The Amer Ari Invitational will continue with 18 holes on Friday, Feb. 7 and conclude with 18 holes on Saturday, Feb. 8. Texas will be paired with UC Davis, Oregon State and Waseda for Friday's second round, and tee times will begin at 11:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. Pacific) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett recorded a 6-under 66 and is tied for ninth in the individual standings. Starting on hole 1, Bennett tallied seven birdies (holes 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 15 and 18) against just one bogey on Thursday.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 5-under 67 and is tied for 19th place. Starting on hole 2, Morrison registered five birdies (holes 2, 4, 7, 10 and 17) along with an eagle on the par-five 15th hole against two bogeys during his opening round.
- Junior Luke Potter fired a 3-under 69 and is tied for 36th. Starting on hole 3, Potter recorded four birdies (holes 9, 12, 15 and 1) against just one bogey on Thursday.
- Making his collegiate debut, freshman Eduardo Derbez Torres registered a 2-under 70 and is tied for 51st. Starting on hole 3, he tallied four birdies (holes 10, 11, 14 and 2) against a pair of bogeys during his opening round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a 1-under 71 and is tied for 64th. Starting on hole 1, Maas registered five birdies (holes 1, 2, 6, 7 and 15) on Thursday.
- Competing as an individual, sophomore Jack Gilbert posted a 3-under 69 and is tied for 36th place. Starting on hole 16, Gilbert carded five birdies (holes 18, 2, 4, 6 and 15) against a pair of bogeys during his opening round.
