Maas claims medalist crown by 10 strokes, and all three Longhorns finish in the top 10 in the individual standings.
SINGAPORE — University of Texas Men's Golf senior Christiaan Maas won the individual title by 10 strokes and paired with sophomore Daniel Bennett to pace Team South Africa to the team crown at the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships on Saturday at the Tanah Merah Country Club. All three current Longhorns who participated in the prestigious tournament placed in the top 10 of the final individual standings, as sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (Mexico) tied for sixth and Bennett tied for eighth.
South Africa completed the tournament with a 72-hole score of 29-under 547 (139-135-132-141) to claim an eight-shot victory over runner-up Australia at 21-under 555. England placed third at 19-under 557, and Mexico earned a fourth-place team finish at 17-under 559 (137-143-137-142). This marked the first team championship for South Africa in tournament history, as its previous best finish was a silver medal in 1980. Prior to that, its only podium finishes were bronze in 1970 and 1972. Mexico registered its first top-five finish at the event since earning silver in 2012, its only medalist performance in the championship.
Maas became the first individual from South Africa and first from the African continent to win the Eisenhower Trophy with a four-round score of 22-under 266 (66-66-65-69), 10 shots in front of runner-up Declan O'Donovan (Australia) at 12-under 276. Maas' score of 266 tied the second-lowest individual mark in championship history, matching the mark of Victor Perez (France), Lucas Herbert (Australia) and Alejandro Tosti (Argentina) in 2014 in Japan. Spain's Jon Rahm set the low 72-hole total in championship history in 2014 with a mark of 263.
Maas had a remarkable week in Singapore, carding four rounds in the 60s and registering just three bogeys across the 72 holes. In addition to Rahm, previous notable winners of the Eisenhower Trophy include Jack Nicklaus (1960), Hal Sutton (1980), Rickie Fowler (2008) and Cameron Davis (2016).
Derbez Torres tied for sixth with a four-round total of 8-under 280 (69-78-64-69). Bennett finished in a tie for eighth in the 108-player field at 7-under 281 (73-69-67-72).
The World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition conducted by the International Golf Federation (IGF). This marked the 34th edition of the Men's World Amateur Team Championship, which was first played in 1958 on the Old Course at St. Andrews. The men will compete for the Eisenhower Trophy.
The men's Championship consisted of 72 holes of stroke play, and teams are comprised of 2-3 players. In each 18-hole round, the total of the two lowest scores by players of each team constitutes the team score for that round. The total of the two-player team scores for the four rounds is the team's score for the Championship. The Champion is the team with the lowest total score of 72 holes.
The 2025 World Amateur Team Championships featured 36 teams that competed for the Eisenhower Trophy. The IGF utilizes the World Amateur Golf Rankings as a method to determine the qualification.
