Texas run-rules Ole Miss, 10-0, in seven-inning non-conference affair
ARLINGTON, Texas — Left-handed pitcher Luke Harrison shut down Ole Miss (1-1) and Texas (1-1) used a seven-run fourth to run-rule the Rebels, 10-0, Saturday evening at Globe Life Field.
The win marked the Longhorn's first victory under head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
Harrison (1-0) retired 16 of the first 19 batters he faced, recording a career-high 6.1 innings and six strikeouts. The redshirt junior surrendered only two hits and one walk in just his third career start.
After an early pitchers' duel, Texas broke through with seven runs on six hits to chase Ole Miss starter Riley Maddox (0-1) with one out in the fourth.
The Longhorns strung together five straight base runners to open the frame.
With men on second and third, right fielder Max Belyeu kickstarted the scoring with an RBI single.
Two batters later, sophomore Will Gasparino's plated a pair with a double off of the left-field wall.
Catcher Rylan Galvan kept the line moving with a two-run single to push Texas' lead to 5-0.
Fifth-year first baseman Kimble Schuessler followed by doubling home a tally before the Longhorns loaded the bases once again.
With the bases full, shortstop Jalin Flores drew a walk to cap off the fourth-inning outburst.
With Harrison departing to a standing ovation after his career night, sophomore Thomas Burns entered with a pair of Rebels on base. The right-hander retired the side on only six pitches to eliminate the threat in his Texas debut.
In the bottom of the seventh, Belyeu blasted a two-run homer to extend the Longhorns' advantage to 9-0.
Sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza punctuated the run-rule victory with an RBI single, sending the first base dugout into a frenzy.
Texas wraps up the Shriners Children's College Showdown with long-time Big 12 rival Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Globe Life Field.
