No. 5 Men’s Golf moves up to fourth after second round at Amer Ari Invitational

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 19-under-par 269 on Friday to move up to fourth place after the second round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club. Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 7-under 65 in Friday's second round and is fourth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 12-under 132 (67-65).
In addition to Morrison's effort, Texas counted scores from freshman Eduardo Derbez Torres (5-under 67), junior Luke Potter (4-under 68) and junior Christiaan Maas (3-under 69) on Friday. The Longhorns, who began the day in a tie for seventh place, climbed three spots up to fourth after recording the second-lowest team score on Friday, just behind the 21-under posted by North Carolina.
No. 9 Oklahoma State holds a two-stroke lead in the team standings with a 36-hole total of 43-under 533 (262-271), and No. 6 North Carolina is second at 41-under 535 (268-267). Oregon is third at 36-under 540 (268-272), just one shot in front of the Longhorns at 35-under 541 (272-269). The 20-team field features nine squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Feb. 5).
Hampton Roberts of North Carolina owns the individual lead after the first 36 holes with a two-round total of 16-under 128 (67-61). Eric Doyle of Oregon is second at 14-under 130 (63-67), and Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang is third at 13-under 131 (64-67). Morrison is one stroke behind Fang entering Saturday's final round.
The Amer Ari Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Saturday, Feb. 8. Texas will be paired with Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Oregon for Saturday's final round, and tee times will begin at 11:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. Pacific) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Junior Tommy Morrison posted a 7-under 65 on Friday and moved into fourth place in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 12-under 132 (67-65). Starting on hole 6, Morrison had eight birdies (holes 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 2 and 4) against just one bogey (hole 13) during his second round.
- Making his collegiate debut at this event, freshman Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded a 5-under 67 in his second round and climbed into a tie for 20th with a 36-hole total of 7-under 137 (70-67). Starting on hole 7, he registered a clean sheet with five birdies (holes 7, 10, 13, 15 and 17) and no bogeys on Friday.
- Junior Luke Potter fired a 4-under 68 on Friday and is tied for 20th with a two-round score of 7-under 137 (69-68). Starting on hole 6, Potter tallied five birdies (holes 13, 14, 15, 18 and 4) against just one bogey (hole 2) during his second round.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 1-under 71 in his second round and is tied for 20th with a 36-hole total of 7-under 137 (66-71). Starting on hole 4, Bennett tallied a single birdie (hole 13) and registered an eagle on the par-five 15th hole on Friday.
- Junior Christiaan Maas shot a 3-under 69 on Friday and is tied for 49th with a two-round score of 4-under 140 (71-69). After opening his second round on hole 5 with a bogey, Maas tallied four birdies (holes 10, 15, 17 and 2) and 13 pars on the day.
- Competing as an individual, sophomore Jack Gilbert posted a 2-under 70 in his second round and is tied for 42nd with a 36-hole total of 5-under 139 (69-70). Starting on hole 17, Gilbert recorded four birdies (holes 2, 4, 12 and 15) on Friday.
