Longhorns use seven-run sixth to win first game of Las Vegas Classic.
LAS VEGAS — Junior shortstop Jalin Flores mounted his third career multi-homer effort and 15th-ranked Texas jumped out to an eight-run advantage, as the Longhorns held off Washington, 10-9, on Friday evening at Las Vegas Ballpark.
After Texas (7-1) put up a seven-spot in the sixth inning, the Huskies (3-7) responded with six runs of their own.
The Longhorns — who once led, 9-1 — had to fend off Washington following a pair of runs in the eighth.
Texas sixth-year right-hander Andre Duplantier II stranded the tying tally 90 feet away and the go-ahead run on second with back-to-back strikeouts, before junior righty Max Grubbs (2) set down the Huskies on 10 pitches to secure the win.
With a 2-1 advantage sparked by Flores' solo shots in both the second and fifth innings, Texas broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth.
Fifth-year senior Kimble Schuessler and freshman Cole Chamberlain each recorded two RBI singles, while junior Rylan Galvan crushed a three-run homer to punctuate 11-batter frame.
On the mound, left-hander Jared Spencer (1-0) finished one strikeout shy of matching his career best with nine punchouts, limiting Washington to one run on four hits. Spencer generated 20 whiffs, including 14 with his slider across six innings.
Washington righty Max Banks (1-2) was charged with the loss, surrendering seven runs across 5 1/3 frames.
In the win, all nine Longhorns reached safely, and four different Texas players notched multi-hit performances. With the victory, the Longhorns extended their winning streak to seven games.
Up next, Texas takes on longtime Big 12 rival Texas Tech on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT from Las Vegas Ballpark.
