Seven-run second inning propels Longhorns to eighth straight win
LAS VEGAS — The 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns launched three homers and used a seven-run frame to top longtime rival Texas Tech, 10-5, on Saturday afternoon at Las Vegas Ballpark.
Texas (8-1) put up a seven-spot in the second, highlighted by a pair of blasts from sophomores Ethan Mendoza and Will Gasparino.
After the Longhorns loaded the bases with one out, left fielder Tommy Farmer IV was hit by a pitch to break the early stalemate.
Two pitches later, catcher Rylan Galvan delivered a two RBI double to push the lead to 3-0.
Mendoza followed with an opposite field three-run jack, before Gasparino capped off the crooked number with a solo shot.
The Longhorns extended their advantage to double digits, plating three more tallies in the fifth.
Freshman Adrian Rodriguez rocketed his third career home run, and Texas capitalized on multiple Red Raider miscues to bookend its offensive outburst.
Redshirt junior left-hander Luke Harrison (2-0) held Texas Tech (2-6) in check across the first five frames. Harrison yielded just one run on six hits, totaling a career-best seven strikeouts.
Freshman southpaw Dylan Volantis (1) logged his first career save, pitching the final three innings. Volantis struck out five and did not allow an earned run.
Texas Tech right-hander Lukas Pirko (0-1) was charged with the loss, after getting tagged for seven runs — five earned — over 1 2/3 frames.
In the win, Mendoza notched his third consecutive multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Overall, four Longhorns mounted at least two hits, while all nine starters reached safely.
The Longhorns will look to capture the Las Vegas Classic crown on Sunday, as Texas takes on Illinois. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
