Longhorns extend winning streak to 15 games behind five-run seventh
STARKVILLE, Miss. — The No. 11 Texas baseball team emerged victorious in its first Southeastern Conference game in program history with an 8-7 win at Mississippi State on Friday evening.
The Longhorns (15-1, 1-0 SEC) used a five-run seventh, capped off by a go-ahead three-run blast from Casey Borba to win their 15th straight contest.
Freshman Dylan Volantis (2) stranded the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, as the southpaw recorded his second career save.
Sixth-year righty Andre Duplantier II (2-0) earned the victory, tossing three innings in relief of starter Jared Spencer.
Duplantier II retired eight of the first nine hitters he faced, helping contain the Mississippi State bats after the Bulldogs (13-5, 0-1 SEC) took an early 4-2 lead.
Junior catcher Rylan Galvan put the Longhorns on the board with a two-run jack in the second, but Mississippi State answered with a four-spot of its own in the bottom half on pair of home runs.
Spencer promptly set down 11 of the next 13 Bulldogs, setting the stage for Texas' offense.
In the sixth, sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza roped a one-out triple before coming around to score on a Mississippi State miscue.
One frame later, sophomore center fielder Will Gasparino brought the Longhorns within one on an RBI single.
Two pitches later, Galvan leveled the score with a single up the middle.
Mississippi State right-handed reliever Chase Hungate (1-1) was charged with the loss. Hungate surrendered three runs, while only registering one out.
In the victory, four Longhorns finished with multi-hit efforts, as Galvan and Borba both notched three RBI.
Texas will look to continue to build on its best start in 20 years, as the Longhorns are set to play a doubleheader against Mississippi State on Sunday.
Game one is slated for 1 p.m., with the series finale coming approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the twin bill's front end at Dudy Noble Field.
