Longhorns register first series win over top-2 team in six years

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 8 Texas recorded its first-ever Southeastern Conference home series victory, defeating No. 2 LSU, 6-2, in a rubber game Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (19-3, 5-1 SEC) limited the Tigers (22-3, 4-2 SEC) to a season-low two runs and scored in three of the first four frames to secure their first series win over a top-2 team since March 1-3, 2019.

Right fielder Max Belyeu drove in four of the six Texas tallies, highlighted by a two-run shot in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth.

Belyeu's 403-foot blast sent the 7,211 fans into a frenzy, as the Longhorns jumped ahead, 5-0.

The early run support proved to be more than enough for right-hander Ruger Riojas and southpaw Dylan Volantis.

In his first start in burnt orange, Riojas (5-1) tossed a co-career-long 5 2/3 innings of two-run baseball, punching out six batters along the way.

Meanwhile, Volantis (5) retired nine of the final 10 LSU batters, holding the visitors hitless over the final 3 1/3 frames. The freshman struck out five of the first six Tigers he faced, before working around a two-out walk to lock down the save in the ninth.

LSU hard-throwing righty Chase Shores (4-1) was chased after four innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits.

Up next, the Longhorns wrap up their-five game homestand against Sam Houston on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. from UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
