Longhorns defeat top-2 team for first time since 2019
AUSTIN, Texas — The eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns rallied from a trio of multi-run deficits for an 11-7 victory over No. 2 LSU in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Center fielder Will Gasparino delivered the game-winning hit with two outs in the seventh, as the Longhorns (18-2, 4-1 SEC) scored five unanswered runs to even the series with LSU (22-2, 4-1 SEC).
Shortstop Jalin Flores finished 3-for-5 and scored four times, highlighted by a solo shot to level the contest, 7-7. Flores also added an insurance tally for Texas with an RBI single in the eighth.
Meanwhile, catcher Rylan Galvan homered for the fourth straight game, smacking a go-ahead three-run blast in the fifth. Galvan's team-leading ninth jack helped the Longhorns erase a 5-3 deficit.
The Tigers jumped on the board first with a pair of tallies in the fourth, but Texas immediately responded on back-to-back RBI from corner infielders Adrian Rodriguez and Kimble Schuessler.
In the win, Schuessler notched his fifth multi-hit effort in the last seven games, capping off the Longhorns' outburst with a two-run single in the eighth.
Right-hander Max Grubbs (2-0) earned the win in relief of southpaw Luke Harrison. Grubbs scattered two runs across 3 2/3 frames, striking out three Tigers along the way.
Lefty Dylan Volantis (4) recorded the final four outs on just 12 pitches to lock down Texas' first victory over a top-2 team since the Longhorns defeated then-No. 2 LSU on March 3, 2019.
Prior to Saturday's showdown, Texas hosted its second traDISCHions day of the 2025 campaign.
The Longhorns honored right-handed pitcher Roger Clemens, who guided Texas to consecutive College World Series appearances, including the 1983 national championship.
After being selected as the 19th overall pick in the 1983 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Boston Red Sox, Clemens would go on to win an MLB-leading seven Cy Young Awards and earn 11 All-Star selections across his 24-year MLB career.
The Longhorns will look to secure the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
