Longhorns score double-digit runs for fourth consecutive game
AUSTIN, Texas — The 12th-ranked University of Texas baseball team smacked a season-best five homers and used a seven-spot to run-rule Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 15-5, Tuesday evening at UFCU-Disch Falk Field.
The victory marked the Longhorns' 10th win in a row, their longest winning streak since a 16-game stretch two years ago.
Texas (10-1) scored in all but one frame of the eight-inning contest, highlighted by a seven-run fourth.
After the Islanders (6-7) took a narrow 5-4 lead, the Longhorns responded with their sixth frame of at least seven runs this season.
Left fielder Easton Winfield leveled the score with an RBI ground out.
Two batters later, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi backstop Logan Vaughan made an errant throw that trickled into left, allowing Texas third baseman Casey Borba to scamper home.
The Longhorns drew three consecutive walks to extend their lead to 7-5.
Following shortstop Jalin Flores' bases-loaded free pass, designated hitter Adrian Rodriguez padded the advantage with a run-scoring ground out.
Three pitches later, sophomore Will Gasparino punctuated the outburst with a three-run jack to right center field to push the cushion to 11-5.
The Longhorns completed their run-rule win behind Borba's solo in the fifth, catcher Rylan Galvan's two-run homer in the seventh and sophomore Tommy Farmer IV's walk-off free pass in the eighth.
Overall, Texas scored 11 unanswered runs to cap off its second straight midweek win.
In the victory, Galvan notched his first career multi-homer performance, crushing an opposite-field two-run blast in the second as well.
Meanwhile, sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza homered for the fourth time in the last six contests, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo shot.
Texas has now scored double-digit runs in four consecutive games, totaling 50 tallies over that stretch.
On the mound, junior right-hander Ruger Riojas (2-0) earned the win in relief, retiring all five batters he faced.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi righty hurler Braden LaRusso (1-1) was tagged with the loss, after surrendering three runs, while only getting one out.
The Longhorns will look to extend their winning streak, with the beginning of a three-game set against Santa Clara on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
