No. 4 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at The Hayt

Potter fires a 1-under 71 on Saturday and is tied for 14th in the individual standings.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 2-over par 290 on Saturday to rest in sixth place after the opening round of The Hayt at Sawgrass Country Club. Junior Luke Potter fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for 14th in the individual standings.
In addition to Potter's effort, Texas counted scores from freshman Daniel Bennett (1-over 73), junior Christiaan Maas (1-over 73) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-over 73) on Saturday.
No. 18 Alabama registered a 9-under 279 and holds a four-stroke lead in the team standings following the opening round. Duke is second at 5-under 283, while No. 14 South Carolina and No. 9 Virginia are tied for third at 2-under 286. The 15-team field features five squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Mar. 5).
Alabama's Jonathan Griz holds the individual lead after the first 18 holes after posting a 5-under 67 on Saturday. Four golfers are one shot off the lead in a tie for second, including Luke Sample of Duke, Justin Matthews of Charlotte, Nathan Franks of South Carolina and William Love of Duke.
The Hayt will continue with 18 holes on Sunday, Mar. 9 and conclude with 18 holes on Monday, Mar. 10. Texas will be paired with Virginia and Charlotte for Sunday's second round, and tee times will begin at 8 a.m. Central (9 a.m. Eastern) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Junior Luke Potter recorded a 1-under 71 and is tied for 14th in the individual standings. After making the turn at 1-over, he made birdies at 12 and 14 to climb to 1-under. Potter made a bogey on 16 but carded a birdie on the closing 18th hole to finish at 1-under.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 1-over 73 and is tied for 25th place. He registered two birdies (holes 8 and 18) during his opening round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas tallied a 1-over 73 and is tied for 25th place. Maas recorded three birdies (holes 1, 4 and 10) on Saturday.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert carded a 1-over 73 and is tied for 25th place. He registered a pair of birdies (holes 10 and 11) in his opening round.
- Junior Tommy Morrison fired a 3-over 75 and is tied for 49th place. Morrison was 5-over through his opening 12 holes before closing his round with a pair of birdies (holes 16 and 18) and four pars finish at 3-over on Saturday.
