No. 4 Men’s Golf climbs to fourth after second round at The Hayt

Potter cards a 6-under 66 on Sunday and is third in the individual standings entering Monday’s final round.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 14-under par 274 on Sunday, the low team score of the day, to climb to fourth place after the second round of The Hayt at Sawgrass Country Club. Junior Luke Potter posted a 6-under 66 and is third in the individual standings.
In addition to Potter's effort, Texas counted scores from junior Christiaan Maas (5-under 67), junior Tommy Morrison (2-under 70) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-under 71) on Sunday.
No. 18 Alabama holds a five-stroke lead in the team standings following the second round with a 36-hole total of 22-under 554 (279-275). No. 9 Virginia is second at 17-under 559 (286-273), and Duke is third at 13-under 563 (283-280). The Longhorns are 10 strokes off the lead in fourth at 12-under 564 (290-274). The 15-team field features five squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Mar. 5).
North Carolina's David Ford holds the individual lead after 36 holes with a two-round score of 10-under 134 (69-65). Jonathan Griz of Alabama is in second at 9-under 135 (67-68), while Potter is just three strokes off the lead in third place at 7-under 137 (71-66). Maas enters the final round in a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (73-67).
The Hayt will conclude with 18 holes on Monday, Mar. 10. Texas will be paired with No. 8 North Carolina and No. 14 South Carolina for Monday's final round, and tee times will begin at 9:30 a.m. Central (10:30 a.m. Eastern) off the 4th tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Luke Potter fired a 6-under 66 in his second round and moved up 11 spots into third place in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 7-under 137 (71-66). Starting on hole 3, Potter made birdies on holes 4, 8, 11, 12, 14, 18 and 1 before a bogey on his closing 2nd hole left him at 6-under on the day. The 6-under 66 was one stroke off his collegiate-low 18-hole score of 7-under 65, set twice previously.
- Junior Christiaan Maas posted a 5-under 67 on Sunday and climbed 16 spots into a tie for ninth place with a two-round score of 4-under 140 (73-67). Starting on hole 4, Maas recorded birdies on 4, 5 and 7 and added an eagle on the par-five 8th hole. He made birdie on 11 before a bogey on 13 dropped him back to 5-under on the day, and he closed out his round with eight-straight pars.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 2-under 70 in his second round and is tied for 34th place with a 36-hole total of 1-over 145 (75-70). Starting on hole 7, Morrison started with a bogey on his opening hole but bounced back with birdies on holes 8, 9 and 10 to reach 2-under through the opening four holes. A double-bogey on 11 dropped him back to even-par, and Morrison responded with birdies on 15, 2 and 4 before a bogey on the finishing 6th hole closed out his 2-under in the second round.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert fired a 1-under 71 on Sunday and is tied for 27th with a two-round score of even-par 144 (73-71). Starting on hole 6, Gilbert posted a birdie on hole 11 to go along with 17 pars.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett recorded a 1-over 73 in his second round and is tied for 41st place at 2-over 146 (73-73). Starting on hole 5, he tallied four birdies (holes 8, 11, 13 and 14) on Sunday.
